I haven't been able to get an answer from Splenda about their product. I am having troble getting my keto sticks to kick over into full ketosis readings and I think it may be from the Splenda I am using in my iced tea, coffee and cold tea. Anyone have any info about Splenda and ketosis? Specifically if there is a set amount you can use without it pushing you out of ketosis.

You say iced tea, coffee, and cold tea. The obvious answer is that all of these contain high levels of caffeine, which boosts insulin and therefore increases your body's energy stores to a similar degree that sugar and/or carbs do. So it's the caffeine in the drinks you mentioned, in addition to sugar, that you have to watch out for if you want to acheive ketosis...it has nothing to do with the Splenda.

Easy answer: go decaf. You might also want to use Stevia (which also gives no insulin or calorie increase) rather than Splenda to sweeten these drinks.
Why? Splenda is made from a combination of chlorine and natural sugar. Chlorine is poisonous that's why the body rejects Splenda and does not digest it (since it isn't digested it is "zero calories"). Needless to say Splenda will wear down your liver, kidneys, and digestive system. If you wouldn't swallow chlorinated pool water you probably shouldn't be using Splenda.

Back to Ketosis and what caffeine and it's causing insulin increases has to do with Ketosis:

Lack of carbs (IE eating a low-carb diet, fasting, or doing workouts long enough to deplete your carb supply) leads to lack of insulin, which, in turn, forces the body get its energy (IE glucose/blood-sugar stores) from bodily stores of fat and protien.

But if for any reason you think I am misinformed (as many answerers on the topic of ketosis are) here's a quote from another user who got a best answer (for a different question on ketosis) that verifies my view:
"Since insulin is required to utilize glucose, lack of insulin causes an energy crisis and the body goes to extremes to produce more glucose and also provide ketones for energy. "

The energy the body grabs to create the glucose it would normally get from carbs is from the fat and protien.


Be warned though; ketosis can make you lose muscle (which is formed from protien) along with fat since your body often burns muscle to help it produce the energy it can not get from food. And muscle loss not only decreases performance but reduces your ability to burn fat.
This is why you rarely, if ever, hear of professional athletes or olympians trying to obtain ketosis. It is a quick way to lose weight, but it is far from healthy in the long run in most cases and it's better to stick with low-glycemic potential (low-insulin boosting rather then energy-less) foods like fruits, nuts, and beans for your carbs rather than go for ketosis. That way you will keep your muscle and your heart will be in much better shape than it would be under ketosis.

Did you read the atkins diet book? I don't remember any thing at all in there about splenda killing your ketosis...you might want to get the book, though. It is very informative and gives you all kinds of survival tips, plus you can probably pick one up and just browse through it if you don't want to buy it.
