Yes It is very confusing and for understanding what is Karma and also the teachings of Gita, one has to have the proper mind to understand. it is a very vast subject and explaining and understanding. is some what difficult for persons like us and only Great Yogis can enlighten us. Any way I have tried to tell the meaning of karma as told by Lord Krishna in Gita, to the extent of my understand as under-

As per the Gita, Karma "The action of a person is a good or a bad deed which is stored and determines the events in one’s future lives. One is born time and time again to face the consequences of one’s actions in previous lives." The Krishna’s teachings reflects on how to stop this chain reaction and free oneself from the cycle of birth and death. Well, all said in all Religions, one thing is sure that the Karma of a person influences his lifestyle and all is required of a person is to keep a vigil check on the nine gate which means, nine sense organs so as to perform true ‘Karma’. For this, one has to remember that there is always a head over a heart and realise the realities in life to perform their responsibilities and know their limitations, afterall.

So, believe in your dreams, see the realities and perform the right ‘Karma’

Shrimad Bhagavad Gita - Shrimad literally means 'beautiful, glorious'. Bhagavad means 'divine one' and Gita is 'song'. Shrimad Bhagavad Gita therefore means 'beautiful song of the divine one'. Popularly known as the Gita, it is believed to be part of the smritis. The poem consists of 18 chapters divided into three sections of six chapters each, and contains about 700 verses. It is believed to have been composed around 300 AD by an unknown Brahmin. However, its authorship, or its revision, is sometimes ascribed to Shankaracharya. Although now considered part of the Mahabharata, it was composed later, and therefore added to the epic later. The poem is in the form of a dialogue between two major characters in the Mahabharata: Arjuna and Krishna. Just before the epic battle at Kurukshetra, Arjuna asks Krishna, his charioteer, to take his chariot forward to enable him to size up the opposition. When he looks at them, he sees "The slayer is only an instrument in the hands of destiny...." Krishna exhorts a distressed Arjuna at Kurukshetra. Arjun was Krishna’s alter ego whose horror of having to fight his own kinsmen prompted krishna’s divine exposition to duty and honor in the revelatory verses of Gita.. Arjuna is suddenly struck with remorse at the thought of attempting to gain the kingdom by killing his kinsmen. He tells Krishna that he cannot fight them. Krishna tells him that a warrior's duty is to fight and not question the wisdom of war. Everyone born is destined to die, but it is god or destiny that destroys. The slayer is only an instrument in the hands of god or destiny.

Krishna "Literally means Black" is the eighth incartion of Vishnu, born to Devaki and brought up by Yashoda. The purpose of his incarnation was to destroy his evil uncle Kansa who had unsurped the throne of Mathura. Krishna played a crucial role in Mahabharata and fully revealed his divinity to Arjuna, the son of Indra. Krishna, born on eighth day in the month of Shravana (July-August) celebrated as Janmashtmi is also said to have mystic dance called Ras Lila in the night of Sharad Poornima, autumn moon, with Gopis, milkmaid women of his clan, is an inspiring subject in dance, painting and music even todate. Krishna is also said to be known by the name Bhagwan Jagannath . He was invited to take part in the battle of Kurukshetra and "Rathyatra" is celebrated as an important event for this moment. Krishna and his brother went from Gokul to Mathura and the Gopis and Gokul dwellers give them a hearty see off as they leave in a "Rath" with Akurji. The statues of Krishna, Balaram and Subhadra are found in Jagannathpuri in Orissa which is worshipped with great fervour during Rathyatra.

Krishna's advice and guidance to Arjuna at the battlefield constitute the text of the Gita. The first section deals with Karma Yoga or the philosophy of action. Nishkama karma, or an action performed without thought for any compensation and without fear of the consequences, is the central teaching of this section. It explains that one must perform one's karma which is decided at birth depending on which caste one is born into. -

Karma is a kind of duty. To begin with, do it to yourself. That is, eat and live in a way that is healthy. Then you look around and see what you should do to your family. The next step would be to look around and see what you can do to others. That is, be helpful. Enlarge your area of Karma and serve the needy to the best of your ability.
While doing karma you don’t expect much in return. Do your job sincerely. God oversees everything. You will be rewarded or punished according to your karma. Don’t get too wrapped in the events while doing karma. Have a sense of detachment. Romove hatred, jealousy, indulgence, vengeance etc, while doing karma. Any act, which is lauded able by the majority, is good karma.
This is what I could gather by reading Geeta. You may have longer explanation based on encyclopedia available to all the answerers. I have consulted my own feelings.

In Gita Yoga system is being talked of. Yoga means connection of your soul with the super soul so that you may purify yourself and can go back to Godhead. So the basic Karma as talked in Gita is to attain supreme.
Gita more over is a realisatoin of oneself as it talks of soul and body and many more.
U cannot chose it by yourself nor by any other person as God is the most authentic source so just rely on scriptures or any desciplic sucession emancinating from Lord.

Vijay has summarised it reasonably well above.
You are asking the right question and have the right reference i.e. the Gita.
This subject is best understood with the help of a bona fide guru as pointed out in the sastras. As a word of caution, be careful in choosing the right guru. Guru must be "qualified". One qualification is that he will never ever claim to be God himself.
Continue with your sincere inquiry and you will find the answer over time or sooner if Krsna bestows His mercy on you.

There are many duties of human beings that are describe by Sri Krishna in Gita.

"Karma" means "acitvity". And there are do's and don'ts. Here is simple summary

Dont's - negative "karma"
====================
1) No animal slaugher (no meat eating)
2) No illicit connection with women/men (outside marriage)
3) No intoxication (wine, smoking, etc)
4) No gambling (too much greed for money)

Do's - positive "karma"
=================
1) Austerity (to suffer for other's good or for one's own good)
2) Mercy - on other living beings , not just humans
3) Truthfulness - to accept truthful words from whereever they come
4) Cleanliness - of body, mind and soul.

=========

In summary, the ultimate instruction of Sri Krishna is

"Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me. I shall deliver you from all sinful reaction. Do not fear."

This is the ultimate instruction of Sri Krishna, the God of all Gods, devadeva. And the best self interest of human being is to surrender to the protection of Sri Krishna, and depend on Him. Always to think and remember him, by chanting the holy names.

Hare Rama Hare Rama RAma Rama hare hare
hare krishna hare krishna krishna krishna hare hare

harer nama harer nama harer namaiva kevalam
kalau nasty eva nasty eva nasty eva gatir anyatha

"In this age of quarrel and hypocrisy the only means of deliverance is chanting the holy name of the Lord. There is no other way. There is no other way. There is no other way."

Activites - Karma

We see suffering in this world; and we see some people are rich and some are poor. There is nothing automatic or by chance. If we act "good" - as per the "do's", that I said above, you increase your bank balance (punya) of "goodness" and there by you enjoy good results. Similarly if we perform "Don'ts", you become bankrupt and suffer for our own deeds, which we may not remember in this life, but we have done them in the past life or few years before which we may not remember. But God, as Paramtma is present in every heart and is the witness of all our actions; so He awards us the results even if we forget our actions in the past.

I would suggest you to go through the website that I gave below and take sufficient time to read and thoroughly understand all the concepts. If you have any questions please write to my email

Sri krishna had to covince someway Arjuna to combat and Arjuna replaced into packed with doubts Krishna advised him each and every of the yogas just to make him sense that it replaced into the rule of thumb of the character that the conflict is being fought no heart emotions and emotional attachement Arjuna quickly understood them .yet as quickly as we see the mahabharat arjuna acted as though he has completely forgotten it.like the episode of abhimanyu he replaced into out of his senses and somewhat some greater,or maybe after the conflict replaced into gained he replaced right into a lay guy somewhat than a switched over individual that he replaced into given the appropriate expertise so Arjuna would desire to not stay upto Krishnas expectancies so he isn't worshipped.
