Very, very rarely do they work for longer than a few months. It takes a special couple to keep a commitment when you can't spend time together. There has to be a tremendous level of trust between both people and you both have to really make the effort to connect in any way you can as often as possible. In long-term long distance relationships there's usually a strong feeling of "where can this be going in the future if we never even see each other" and there's always that feeling of wondering how you can really know a person when you're left out of so much of their life.
Best potential for survivability- relationship started before the separate locations and the long-distance time is limited (and preferably short), like if one person is studying abroad but will be home in a few months.

It throws another complication into the relationship. Relationships already are challenging to most people, the commitment, the work involved, and the long-distance thing just adds another dimension to it that could impact the relationship negatively.
My personal feeling is not to get involved in long-distance relationships. They are hard enough to deal with when the guy lives here in town. I've also come to believe that true intimacy doesn't have the chance to form when you don't see your partner very much in person. How could it? Intimacy comes from the bonding and trust that occurs from day-to-day or nearly day-to-day interactions while we are just going about living our lives. If your partner is not around physically, it seems like that would really hamper the process of intimacy getting stronger.
Just my 2 rubles.

Long distance challenges you both! You can re-think about your relationship! You can decide whether you are perfect for each other or not!
If you aim at a strong life mate distance is what you need to get over with!

LDR's as they are called have never had a good track record. The court and spark tends to lose its flint across the miles. Neither person is no longer involved in the day-to-day simple thing in life. For example, I went to a concert with some friends or you know how guys don't know how to shop, well I ran into this guy and it was pathetic so I helped him buy groceries. You would have laughed.
The little things that you do when you are local are little but so big in the scheme of things.

I believe they can work as long as the people in the relationship actually get to see each other once in a while.
