Have your brother in law turn it around by asking his companion for advice about college. The older guy is obviously needing validation, and is compensating for something that makes him feel less than he wants to feel. It is the hardest thing to humble yourself; your brother in law can be the bigger man by doing it first, and he will be helping the work.

Thomas Edison had no college education and had a couple of bright ideas that seem to have changed the world a bit.
The lack of a degree is not an indication of a lack of educatin. My career is in engineering (software and hardware), yet I have no degree. I've worked with a number on non-degreed engineers. The lack of a formal degree is often made up for with equivalent experience. Always read, study, learn. What you know will be evident. If you can hold an intelligent conversaion with someone; if you can write and speak well... these are proof of your education.
Look around here... there are lots of college educated idiots; people who hold a degree but are unable to form a coherent sentence. They just don't mean that much.

Sounds like the older one has some self-esteem issues. Perhaps he could just diffuse the situation by acknowledging how much hard work it takes to get a degree and say something about how he is looking forward to the challenge himself. He won't be with is the same companion the whole time will he? Remind him that "this too shall pass" and what doesn't kill him will make him stronger, turn the other cheek. Your encouragement and support will go a long way.

Tell your brother in law do not give up hope .There were 2 elders teaching my husband one very educated the other Who had been home schooled and live on a farm in UT who was very UN-educated .My husband a very educated man was being taught by 2 elders The one elder was very educated But My husband who was very bright had read the book of Mormon in one week and started asking all these questions That the educated elder could not answer because he did not have the spirit. With him after a moment of silence from the educated elder and my husband .The very uneducated elder stated to my husband who felt he had to understand every question right now.
Well its kind of like this the elder said when we have a child do we feed him meat and vegetables first and he said a baby eats its mothers milk and when it can eat and digest more he is given more to eat which helps him with his growing
Then he bore his testimony eloquently and perfectly. It was the little un-educated elder that helped my husband to understand and join the church this elder turned his heart.
You can know all the scriptures in the world but what's more important is to have understanding in your heart.
Just like when Joseph Smith took the Book of Mormon to a Man who said yes they were true figures in the BOM and then stated I can't read a sealed book. Yet and uneducated man understood it and could read it.
Has to do with what’s in your soul.
I had a similar experianes with my missionaries one from the second set was educated but only going though the motions. What brought me into the church was the elders who spoke from there heart and were patient with me.
I would tell your Brother in law to confront him nicely and ask that he give him a chance to interject now and again during the lessons.
Tell him I said thank you for going because its people like him that brought us into the church. Diane

your brother in-law friend needs some humbling it seems and forgets the teachings of the Bible; That God has chosen foolishness of preaching to confound the wise. Here a few scriptures opposed to what this friend is doing; 1 Samuel 2:3 Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed. Job 15:2 Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction. Proverbs 11:9 An hypocrite with his mouth destroyeth his neighbour: but through knowledge shall the just be delivered.Proverbs 12:1 Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish.Proverbs 12:23 A prudent man concealeth knowledge: but the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness.Ecclesiastes 1:18 For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.Isaiah 28:9 Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts.Hosea 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.
And if you notice Jesus disciples were not very smart about the world; Acts 4:13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.
Also Knowledge is not eternal so therefore useless; 1 Corinthians 13:8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
But also see that any knowledge must be counted as crap compared to Jesus; Philippians 3:8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,
Also pride comes before a Fall, and knowledge and pride are what Satan had to fall; Proverbs 16:18 Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. Isaiah 14:12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!

There are three problems here (1) belief in religion (2) self-esteem issues from one of the individuals (3) weakness in dealing with a real-life problem by the younger individual who chooses to hide behind a fantasy god who he thinks will save him from life real problems and problem-people. All three must be dealt with.
