You will not be leaving the US so you will not need a passport. A passport is for when you leave the US and go to another country.
I cannot believe there are people that actually think you have to have a passport to go state to state.

When you apply for a pass port, you are applying to the United States Department of Immigration. What does that tell you?
I just read some of the answers to your question, and I don't know if they are just incredibly uninformed or purposely trying to make your life that much more complicated!
Right now, you do not need a passport for three different types of travel. And that is to any other US State or Territory, travel to Mexico, or travel to Canada.
But don't expect that do remain for very long. A law was passed that makes a pass port required for flying in and out of Canada, but not driving in or out --figure that one out...
To explain to you how this stuff works, and hopefully I won't confuse you. The pass port is your country's permission slip, so to speak, to allow you to travel out of the country.
And since this is the case, it would stand to reason that you need a "permission slip" to enter another country. And that permission slip is called a Visa. And that is issued by that country's embassy located in your country.
So let's say you are an American and you plan on visiting England. The first thing you have to do is apply for your pass port, and that takes about two weeks. Then once you receive it, you have to mail it to the English Embassy in Washington DC., and they issue you a Visa.
There are pages in your pass port for the visas you may get, and all they really are is a special stamp, or a piece of paper that is glued to a page in your pass port. Then when you arrive at the airport in England, you will have to show them your pass port with the visa in it, and then they will let you in the country.

I have this mental image of some jack-booted thug manning a checkpoint at the Indiana state line, demanding to see everyone's travel papers. There's a red-and-white striped pole across the road, lots of razor wire fencing, a couple of mounted machine guns, and perhaps a small watch tower.
Better yet, Sergeant Schultz from Hogan's Heroes. In his best faux-German accent, "Dese pay-pahs ah not in or-dah!"
We live in the freest country in the history of the human race, and there are some among us who don't even know it. God help us...

Ok......Are you American ? I suppose you are ..NO, you don't need to carry a passport in America if you are American...........
You use a passport to identify your point and purpose when traveling out of the country.....And correctly ,Americans who travel abroad will be required to show their passports when they disembark (return) to America......

Yes...You need it for traveling between states. You also need to carry a plunger, some hair dye, and a box of baby mice. But be sure you have them all in a leopard print napsack, with a red draw string.
Ahhhh...thankyouverymuch!
