depending on what your ASVAB scores are it could be a great choice. the Navy has some kicka$$ technical schools.

there are basically 3 divisions of the Navy, there is the surface fleet (surface ships), subsurface (submarines) and the airdales (naval aviation). your ASVAB score basically determine what schools you will qualify for and your rating (job that you perform) pretty much determines if you will be surface, subsurface or stationed to an air detachment.

the majority of naval personal are assigned to the surface fleet in some way. the US Navy is ALWAYS involved in any type of war or military event...right now the Navy is sending more ships to the Gulf for a variety of reason.

so there is an very big chance that you could end up in a "combat zone" even if you are out to sea. fortunately naval vessels are very safe when out to sea, some of the defense systems are pretty amazing.

Just about every war since the end of WWII has been a land based war. THe exception to this was the Falklands conflict of 1982 when the British Royal Navy suffered large casualties amongst its Naval fleet. So YES you are probably going to be sent to potential war zones however the risk to you at Sea is vastly reduced and almost removed entirely by the distance you are from the Combat zone itself.
I Know this because I served in the Royal Navy for 26 Years as a Chief Petty Officer and I also served in the Falklands durin g the conflict of 1982.
Tell your parents to relax, you may just get mowed down by a car at home long before an Iraqi bullet claims your life out at sea 60 Miles from Harms way.
Plus the life is a good one. Pay, travel and good friends along with an education a pension for those who serve a life sentence and job security for those who need it.

Good luck.

Yes, the Navy is in the Litterboxes. truly, it depends on your rating what your chances are of going over there. also, some are over there boots on the ground in support capacities with Army and Marine units. Others are on deployment out in the Gulf babysitting oil terminals. Still others are over there rebuilding Iraq and Afghanistan.

So yes, there is ALWAYS the possibility that you will end up in harm's way.

But don't let that stop you. As an Adult, you can do what is best for you, your parents , having raised you properly, should be porud to have a child who is willing to enlist and become part of something bigger than himself.

Things you can tell them:

The GI Bill..a $1200 contribution from you will net a $30,000 or higher return for education. You can get college courses completely paid for under Tuition Assistance while in. You can get college credit just for completeing boot camp and A/C school

Your training will be top notch and wills erve you well when you get out. If the rating you choose requires a security clearance(and you get one), you will be HIGHLY marketable inthe civilian world.

sometimes they do get sent over there, but i think it really depends on what your wanting to do in the navy...and tell your parents its your decision if you want to join the navy...i want to join the air force but my parents support me in whatever...and it will make you a better person to join the military...and i know your parents are scared of you joining cause you could get sent over to iraq, but tey should be proud that you want to do something to help
