Alcoholics don't necessarily start drinking allot a tone time. They do tend to drink on schedule, every Friday and Saturday, those 4-6 beers after work, to much at social function, then into denial and hiding of bottles. Me I just spent most of my time at the bar, at first nursing a drink then drinking much faster, and going home and drinking more. I seldom got drunk, this is 'not' a prerequisite to being an alcoholic. It is actually how you drink not how much you drink. Anybody with a drinking pattern or a pattern of over drinking, even just on weekends, might be alcoholic.

There are so many different types of alcoholics, they can drink all day long, have a couple drinks with dinner everything- drink everynight at the bar, basically if a person is always drinking, always smelling like alcohol, and are upset and angry when they can't drink, more than likely they are an alcoholic.

If they say things like I need a drink or I'm happy where is that
bottle or I'm upset I'm going to go to the bar they are no longer
using alcohol as a beverage.
If they say I need a hair of the dog or I need a drink to take the edge
off my shakes. They are beginning to acquire an addiction.
If they can't stay sober before noon drink alone or spend all their
money on alcohol they have a begun to have a problem.
If they have a stroke and are flopping around on the floor they
may be to far advanced for any help.
At what point you feel someone has Alcoholism is up to you.

If they cannot seem to go one day without a drink, then they have a drinking problem. If they drink to excess every day, then they are an alcoholic.
