Swimming is an excellent exercise to lose weight and tone muscles. Th best thing is, is that it has virtually no impact on the joints. Try a half an hour a day to start then work up to more time each day.

Swimming is about the best exercise to take. It is a superb aerobic and anaerobic workout, it tones muscles, supports your weight while providing some resistance to your muscles. It is also an excellent cardiovascular-pulmonary exercise.
If you have not been in the water for some time then use the local swimming pool and avoid busy times. Work up as you feel necessary 15-20 minutes at first and then when you feel you can do longer do so. this may take a week or so, and there is no need to rush it, try aiming for one hour three or four times a week and this should be sufficient.
Remember though do not swim on a full stomach and after taking alcohol.

Swimming is a very good and safe idea, depending on how good you are at it, and how sober you are when you do it. But there's more to swimming, than what we call swimming. I once had a nieghbor who reffered to water aerobics as swimming. If you belong to the YMCA, Water Aerobics is another good idea. I suggest 3 hours a day, for swimmng, and 2 days a week for water aerobics. I went twice a week, for awhile, when I still lived where there's a YMCA. If there's a pool where you live, it's an acceptable alternative if you don't like to be in public.

swimmign is great! in high school i joined the swim team and lost 13lbs in 3 months. my bf a few years ago was ona swim team also and lost almost 100 lb.. he stopped for year, started to work at a fast food restraunt on the west coast (in-n-out, yummy) so after eating a burger and fries everyday for almost a year he gained 80lbs. he recently joined another swim team and has already lost 20 lbs.
it is a low impact sport and literally works every musclein your body! water aerobics also burns alot of calories
i suggest swimmign for a half hour a day. always want to stat out cmall and work your way up. swim teams usually practice for an hour and a half a day. this includes sprint (swimmign as fast as you can) and endurance (simmign nonstop for 20 laps)
vary the workout. =)
good luck

about 20minutes to an hour a day for a LONG time, running is also a good exercise that helps you lose weight faster, but it is all personal preference.
