A TV has multiple inputs but only two speakers (at about 10 Watts each).
So, the best you can do is listen to stereo sound.

Using an AV receiver you can setup a multi-speaker system and you can listen to true surround sound, such as Dolby Digital 5.1 (six speakers).

Plus, You can make an AV system really loud!

No, if you're okay with the sound coming out of your tv speakers. If you want something louder, or surround sound, or theater sound quality then you go with a reciever.
