my girlfriend and I took some time apart and we hung out for the first time in 5 months. she said "I want to do right by you". i am confused. What was she trying to say?

It usually means that she is trying to distance herself from you, but because of your previous connection, wants to do it kindly and slowly. She will keep some contact with you, but you will never be as close as before.

She just needed some time on her back with other men. By spending the time apart it made it okay in her head so she wouldn't feel guilty. She came back because she caught a few STD's and noone wanted her anymore. Get it checked bro.

hm she wants to be yours and be upfront and do the right things but usually the guy says it when he knocks her up with a baby he does the right thing and provides or takes some responsiblity ask her for gods sake .. maybe she wants to let you know what she has been doing for past 5 months and start over with a clean slate..

ASK HER!!!! we weren't there. we don't have a clue what she may have meant by that. there's no defined book of definitions that will just explain little phrases like that. i'm sure there was some kind of conversation before and after that comment.... soooo..... think really hard about what was said around that and try to put something together.... then, TALK TO HER!!!! communication is key... good luck!

Why don't you go & ask her what she means? You shouldn't be relying on the internet to answer such an important question. It does sound like she wants to be good to you, wants to be a good girlfriend to you. I don't know, she might mean something else, you should ask her yourself. We can't just guess this.....
