I'm a nurse. Topamax is a medication that has helped many people with migraines. You would need to see a doctor for a prescription. You can also try the many OTC meds and see if it helps you at all. Take care.

Hi there,
I am a sufferer of severe migraines and have been for over ten years. I have tried so many thing to help and found very little that does.
I am also a nurse and I know that if you are getting frequent migraines which is considered more than one a month you should go and see you docter about perscribing some preventative medication. Migraines are caused by dilation of the blood vessles in the scalp. Preventative medication works to make sure this does not happen.
As for treating an attack an antihistamine can be taken with a pain killer to work at reversing the dilation and also blocking the pain receptors that cause the pain. (advil and paracetomal). This will work but if you have severe migraines they wont as with me.
Coedine I find relieves a little, drink plenty of water and rest in quiet. I also find the number one thing that relieves the pain is a hard head massage or pinching the top of your nose bridge between your fingers for thirty seconds.
Hope this helps...but once again best advice go to the doc and see about some preventative medications!!

I suffer with migraines and they are really not nice, I too get spot in front of my eyes and have a numb sensation sometimes in my hands and other times in my face, i have also experienced the inability to string a sentence together which i found a little alarming. I cant remember whether my GP said that you shouldn't suffer with more than 2 migraines a month or whether i read it somewhere as i could be a sign of an underlying problem with having them that frequent, not that i am trying to scare you I think maybe you should visit your GP and see what he thinks. To be honest though i have only managed to get rid of one migraine and i took a strong painkiller and then had a few beers, not that i recommend that. Other than that i find that normal painkillers a dark room and sleeping it off tends to work. P.s don't buy migrelief (The pink and yellow tablets) they don't work. And try and find out what triggers your migraine and try and avoid it. I cut out chocolate and i have only had one in about the past 2 years. Sorry for waffling on! Hope I've been some help to you.

I get migraines too.... I get 2 types, the most common one (and least severe) is easily treated with pseudophedrine and ibuprofen (such as Advil sinus headache). Most migraines respond best to anti-inflamatory pain killers, such as ibuprofen and naproxem sodium (aleve). Mine seem to be related to pressure in my head (not necessarily in the sinuses) and that's why pseudophedrine works. The new decongestents that came out to replace pseudophedrine don't work at all, so hopefully you're over 18 so you can go to the pharmacy counter and get some of the good stuff.
The other type I get follows a very predictable pattern (first signs at 4pm, peak between 2am-7am, over by 1pm) and is disabling. I can't go to work, or hardly move, the pain is so intense. Painkillers do not work. Nothing works for this except silence and darkness and a heating pad. Even that only helps a little. I was given a prescription for these, but it only made me throw up more. Luckily, I only get these when I go off my birth control for my period, so I simply stay on birth control all the time.

Certain foods can cause migranes...aged cheese, foods with
nitrates like salami or bacon, red wine. There are medications your doctor can prescribe you which will build up in your system
and decrease the frequency of your migranes and the intensity of
them. There are also many prescription medications to stop the migranes. Over the counter medication, I've used and like is
Execedrin Migraine. Good luck.
