i would believe a longer barrel with the smaller 45cal, with a similar charge of powder behind it as a 50 or 54 cal would be ideal for more accuracy and distance. a 45 is plenty of bullet it seems for deer.

They are no different than smokeless rifles in the respect that you will have to experiment with different projectiles and powder charges to find the most accurate load for your muzzleloader. Try the T/C Shockwave or Hornady SST in 200 grain and 100 grains of powder, this seems to be a fairly "universal" (if there is such a thing) load that shoots well in most .45 calibers.

THE NEW SABOT BULLETS ARE QUITE ACCURATE AND APPROACH VELOCITIES CLOSE TO THAT OF CARTRIDGE RIFLES EQUATING OUT TO FLATTER TRAJECTORIES
