I`m just curious to see others responses. Waking up one day to find out that a foreign country or even the United States has launched a nuclear bomb toward another country over night. Because this scenario is very realistic in this day and age. Honestly, it`s my worst nightmare. What would we do?

Weapon types: There are many technical details about nuclear weapons but to the survivor there are only two. There are airburst detonations and ground burst detonations. Airburst detonations produce little of the deadly radioactive fallout that will kill the most people. These will be used on cities or industrial centers and detonated in the air to maximize surface damage... The other is the groundburst which incinerates thousands of square feet of the ground, turning it into a radioactive ash which is sucked high into the sky and falls like snow downwind killing people. This type of detonation will be used on military targets like missile silos or bases. For all intents and purposes the airburst is only dangerous to those in the area. The groundburst is dangerous for thousands of miles downwind. It is the groundburst that you must defend against. A terrorist weapon will be close to the ground and will create dangerous fallout... Unfortunately nuclear terrorism is an even greater possibility... Remember: Fallout can kill...

Radiation Defense: The first thing you need is a decent basement or better yet a fallout or blast shelter, something below the ground will do. If you do not have anything like that go to someone else's basement. Likely they will not know what to do and you will be saving their lives as well. Dirt and concrete in sufficient amounts can lessen the effects of the radiation so that it can not kill you. Cover openings, basement windows, etc. with dirt and if more than a few feet of the walls of the basement are above ground level you may need to build another structure within the basement. A few feet of dirt or concrete between you and the radiation can save your life. If you stock food and water for about three weeks and stay in the shelter for that period of time the radiation outside will usually have disipated (a geiger counter can determine this)... At that point the danger is over in your area, as long as you avoid contaminated water or food. Open water is probably contaminated while well water should be fine. Open food will be contaminated while canned or wrapped food will be fine as long as you wash the dust off first.

The tactical nukes are under the 50 kiloton ranges, some as low as .3 kilotons, used for fighting advancing armies, or small targets. Most likely, our worry will be strategic nukes.

The strategic nukes will takeout whole cities and cause widespread contamination, in the 100-500 kiloton range. They've built higher kilotons, but supposedly, they've been stockpiled or disassembled. One or two strategic nuclear detonations, or even 50 would not cause world-wide contamination, its when you get into a full nuclear exchange, between the US and Russia with 1,000s of nukes going off, is when life would be 'unlivable.'

The W.H.O. predicted in 1982 that "1.1 billion people would be killed outright in such a nuclear war, mainly in the United States, the Soviet Union, Europe, China and Japan. An additional 1.1 billion people would suffer serious injures and radiation sickness, for which medical help would be unavailable. It thus seems possible that more than 2 billion people-almost half of all the humans on Earth-would be destroyed in the immediate aftermath of a global thermonuclear war. ... would probably be enough to reduce at least the Northern Hemisphere to a state of prolonged agony and barbarism."

Carl Sagan made a case that "a war in which a mere 100 megatons were exploded, less than one percent of the world arsenals, and only in low-yield airbursts over cities. ....would ignite thousands of fires, and the smoke from these fires alone would be enough to generate an epoch of cold and dark almost as severe as in the 5000 megaton case. The threshold for ...The Nuclear Winter is very low."

Who says that WW3 has to be a nuclear war? A world War is simply a war where most of the nations are involved. It could be very well argued that the War on Terror is WW3.

Read the Prophecies by Nostradamus. He predicted things from invention of aircraft to 911....and also predicted that the end of the world will be triggered by "fall of the twin brothers"(911), the death of a "great man" (Saddam?) that leads to a worldwide war (III?), from the middle east.
