There's this girl that's very special to me. We're great friends but my feelings run deeper than that. I want to ask the question, but I'm a bit worried that the question can ruin our friendship and make things awkward. I can deal with a 'no' but a rip in our friendship is something I don't want.

Has anyone been asked, or asked to start dating their best friend and their answer made things awkward and distant?

I don't really believe that men and women can be close friends without falling in love. Tell her how you feel, she probably feels the same way or will shortly. A lot of girls are romantically interested in guys that they know like them even if they didn't particularly like them before they knew.

It won't ruin the friendship.

Obviously I can't answer for her. However, being best friends first is usually a sign that your relationship could go the distance.
