Take a picture, scan it and put it on a simple flyer.
State your phone number and maybe adresse along with the dog and some other info about it.
(spots, collar etc..)
And then see what turns up.
If nobody comes to claim it, I guess the best way is to put it in the pound.
Owners do come looking for their pets there sometimes.

Do you have a digital camera? Take a picture of the dog and then makes numerous posters with your phone number and address and go hang them in the local stores, gas stations, post office, police stations , schools, anyplace a lot of people go in & out of so they will see the picture. And make them give you a specific detail about the dog so you can be sure it really is there dog and not some sicko who might mutilate it to get his jollys!Or put an ad in the newspaper. Last resort will be animal shelter. Or keep it!! Good Luck!

Thank you so much for caring about animals enough to take care of them. I actually picked up a dog and because it was a weekend had to wait a few days to get ahold of a vet to give me the number of the owner. In your situation, I would make an honest effort to put up posters, an ad in the paper, etc. to try to find the owner. If you can't, you pretty much only have two options: bring it to the shelter and hope it is claimed or adopted or keep the dog and take care of it yourself. I'm sure you'll make a good decision for the dog.

Cool.....First, you must put a "Found" ad in your local paper. Second, make fliers and post them with some info and a picture on them. Third, call the animal shelters and see if there has been anyone looking for that dog.....Good Luck.
PS..keep an eye out for that other dog. They probably ran away together. My dogs did that all the time.

Post signs in area Vet offices, grocery store bulletin boards and if you can, pay for a found ad in your local newspaper. Some sites let you list found pets, maybe for free, like Petfinder.
Include some general descriptive info like color, build, size, preferably a photo. Hope you can find the owner. After a few weeks if you can't locate an owner you can replace the info on your signs to read that the dog is up for adoption.

Also check at the shelter to see if anyone there has filed a missing dog report that matches, and put flyers up there. They would probably scan the dog for a microchip without making you drop it off--if not, most vets have scanners and would do it for you.
Good luck!

Take a picture and make flyers to hang up at the local post office or around the neighborhood, town, city. Also, you can put a lost/found ad in the local paper.

Post signs up or weight until you get a phone call. i agree, I try to avoid sending dogs to shelters where they are alone and unclaimed. Keep until the time being, there's nothing else you can do until you get a call from its rightful owner.

Post a FOUND DOG flier at the following locations:
http://www.dogdetective.com
local animal shelters
local vetrinarian offices
local pet supply stores
Contact your shelter and ask them how long you should keep the dog in your custody before claiming her yourself. Perhaps she is microchipped - your shelter can scan her to be sure as can any vetrinarian.
Good luck and thanks for taking this little one in.
