Absolutely! It is one of the best aerobic exercises because there is absolutely no trauma to any of your joints and it is a very rigorous aerobic sport. Most swimmers gain muscle mass quickly which in turn burns more calories which leads to FAST weight loss--- go to it girl!!!

Of course swimming can help reduce weight! It helps since swimming is strenuous cardio activity along with muscle strengthening which increases your metabolism to increase your body's ability to burn fat. I believe swimming laps ranks high on level of difficulty of cardio activity/exercise.
Warning, if you are going to swim to exercise, make sure you are in a controlled environment with a lifeguard nearby. Know your limits. Do not go swimming out into a lake or into the ocean without a buddy or a readily available lifevest/floats. Also, make sure you have had proper swimming lessons in the event that you would overtire yourself in too deep of water and have a ways to go before you may rest. Swimming is fun, invigorating, and healthy but can be dangerous if not properly planned for. Good luck and have fun!

throw away your scale.

your body is not a number it is a living organism. do things work right on you body? do you have as much energy as you would like to have?

swimming is good excersie to be sure but muscles weigh more than fat so the results may not show up on a scale. exercise results are better measured by the way you body acts once you start a program. yes you may be tired after a hard swim but once you have caught your breath you should feel better than if you had never exercised at all. if not, try not to over do it next time and see how that feels.

the way you feel in your body is more important that any scales judgement on you.

stay safe

yes i joined a swim team in high school anf in 3 months i lost 13 lbs. it is a great thing to do (swimmign laps of course but if your just swimmign around playign it still does burn caloies but not as much as lap swimmign) it works out literally every part of your body and is a low impact sport, (easy on the joints) compared to runnign on a treamill and hurting the joints in your ankles or knees =)

but is is amazign for loosing weight.

my bf also lost almost 100lbs a few years go he was on a swim team too. we are both in college and he found another swim team to join. he gained alot of weight last year cause he worked at a populare fast food restraunt on the west coast (in-n-out) gianed 80lbs. lol but he staterd swimmign not to long ago and he has already lost about 20 lbs!

water aerobics is also a good way to loose weight that is also low impact

Yeah, that's the best exercise actually coz it works all your muscles from head to toe. But not all can afford to have a swimming pool or go to beach...
Try to swim with your friends always. You loose weight and you also enjoy.

PS> Pls add walking and dieting.

Good Luck...

Yes it can.
It is a "total" cardio work out as it targets all your muscle groups, including muscles you didn't know you had!

I have lost 2 dress sizes, just from swimming 30 minutes 3 times a week.
