I think its a global, monotheistic, Abrahamic religion with roots in the middle east. It means "submission" as in submission to Allah ("The One God") in Arabic. Its followers are called Muslims, which means those who submit. Its holy book is the Qu'ran, authored by Mohammed, a middle-class Meccan in the 7th Century with a passing interest in Christianity and Judaism prior to his Revelation to write the Qu'ran, purportedly by the assistance of Gabriel, a messenger angel. Islam bears similarities to Christianity and Judaism, such as their Creation story, some of their shared prophets, and moral codes, but is inarguably a separate religion, as their holy book is reasonably distinct from the Holy Bible or the Torah.

It has two major branches: Sunni and Shi'ite. Other smaller branches include the Sufi, the Kurdish, etc.
Islamic law's primary earthly leadership should be the Caliphate, but the Islamic world has lacked a Caliphate since 1934.

Well, I don't know any Islamic people personally, but it reminds me a lot of Christianity from what I've seen. I think violence done by Muslims is more likely because of ignorance, poverty and desperation than just because of the religion. There are many Christians who focus on the love and compassion parts of their religion, so I suspect the same is true for Muslims. I think the main difference is that more Muslims live in areas that are short on natural resources. In America our (Christian) ancestors wiped out most of the native population and took control of land with vast natural resources. With this wealth our standard of living improved, people got more educated, and more tolerant of different beliefs. Christians were extremely violent as recently as 100-150 years ago. Britain, Spain, France, and the United States all conquered, enslaved, and killed countless millions of non-Christians all over the world. But so did many non-Christian nations like China and Japan, so I think it's more about resources than religion. It's just easier to justify killing people who are different than you I guess.

My main criticism of it, is that like many Christians, many Islam’s seem to believe their way is the only true way, and God or Allah wants to punish people who are different regardless of how good they are, and how much they benefit the world.

Religions that believe that their God is planning the genocide of people who are different than them are pretty scary. In times of poverty and desperation their followers can be easily convinced to great violence by evil leaders with their own agenda.
If everyone focused on the merciful and compassionate aspects of their religions the world would be a much better place.

I believe most Muslims are decent hard working people who just want to live their lives and worship God. However, I believe that Muslims world wide must do much more to accept people who are non Muslims. It upsets me so much when I see Muslims marching in the streets setting fire to cars and buildings, just because some newspaper in Europe printed a cartoon of Mohammed depicted as a terrorist. Christians-Jews-Hindus and Bhuddists are often criticised. There are comedy shows on television who constantly poke fun of Jesus. Yet we never see the entire Christian world protesting and threatening to behead the creators of these programs. When Muslims threatened to kill the pope, we didn't see Catholics around the world taunting and threatening Muslims, burning mosques, or threatening to kill prominent Imams or Mullahs. As I said, I believe most Muslims are decent people. But to demand tolerance, without being tolerant is hypocrisy.

Muslim will say Islam is peaceful well sorry but LOOK at Saddam and Ossama you call that PEACEFUL to you, if you do well you are being brainwashed!!!! Whats truly sad is many muslim will want ot leave islam but they wont cause they are afraid they will get killed by family or friends and you still call that peaceful !!!! islam really means peace and brother hood.but some people defy it and think they are doing good to their religion(terrorists).many muslim people are also working towards uplift of women.but many muslim countries are against women.they do not let them drive in saudi arabia,in many places women are not alowed to enter mosques,they have to hide behind a veil etc.i would like the muslim world to think more globally and read the quran more carefully.they just need to respect women that's all.i do not hate muslims i like only true muslims.1 of my best friend is a musim and he greets me and his other friends so heartily,he is even thoughtfull and giving.many muslim people are like that.and not terrrorsits as we think they are.god wishes all peple good luck!!!!
