you have to be very careful about using the internet for research and scholarly sources. i would not trust wickipedia. online there are several universities that allow you to use their journals for research. that is where you will find correct information. or, if you have encyclopedia on disks. try the historychannel.com
but a lot of websites are full of opinion rather than facts and this is why you are finding conflicting information. WWI is a broad topic, try and narrow down your topic.

World War I started when the Arch Duke Ferdinand was assasinated, ( a rather botched assasination with some really good trivia if you research on just the circumstances involved with it you could write a long paper) After a period of time the war stalled into trench warfare and neither side could take territory, until the invention of the modern tank. Aviation started as recon and then became more lethal with the addition of machine guns and small bombs, but no parachutes if you were shot down then you most likely would die! The maxim machine gun was introduced and in large numbers for both sides kept the trench warfare in a stalemate until the addition of modern tanks. The US entered very late in the war. The league of nations (precursor to the united nations) was formed at the end of the war and unwittingly set up an economic depression that brought about the rise of Adolph Hitler in the following decade. The treaty of Versaille called for war repairations from Germany and dictated that Germany may not have a military (Which the world ignored as Hitler built a vast war machine). The first use of Chemical warfare was introduced in WW1 called mustard gas (basically chlorine gas) gave thousands a miserable end. The weapons used by US forces was the 1903 Springfield standard bolt action rifle suited with 30-06 rounds and the 1911 a-1 .45 cal pistol. The Germans and turks used the k-98 mauser bolt action 8mm and the luger 9mm pistol. The Maxim Machine Gun was used by both sides. There were many other firearms introduced during this time, but were introduced to late in the war to be of any effect namely the browning automatic rifle and the Louis gun. World War I was "The war to end all wars" uh, were they wrong! Submarines made their debut referred to as U-boats and the sinking of supply ships to england. It ended in 1918 with a full surrender from the Kaiser.

1. It continued France's 100 year losing streak that began at Waterloo;
2. It left the US with the strongest military and economy in the world;
3. It ended the ancient empires of Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Turks;
4. GW Bush joined the National Guard rather than heading overseas
5. The terms of the Armistice were a direct cause of WWII.

Any of these topics would make a fine subject for your paper.

Wikipedia is the end-all for information. Screw all the other websites and just use Wiki... it'll even give you the sources at the bottom of the page.

Anyway from what I understand it was sparked by an assassination and basically alliances had been built up to the point of ridiculousness and I suppose the world got its first real look at how gruesome war can really be, especially when fought on a grand scale.

Oh and because of trench warfare nobody really got anywhere...

WW1 started because a poor farmer boy working for a terrorist group called The Dark hand killed Francis Ferdland (sorry about spelling). Hungry got Germany in. Serbia got Russia in and Russia got France in. Germany broke neutral laws in Belgium and got Britain in. WW1 used new kinds of weapons like machine guns and chemical warfare. There was a new way to fight called trench warfare with often ended terrible. they would spend every waking momeant in the trenches. When a whistle was blown, it meant over the top. This ment they would climb out of the trenches to no mans land to face the enemy. No mans land was an empty part of land that separated the 2 trenches. The trench's went for miles and no mans land was long because the trenches were from 60 feet to a half to a mile apart. Italy was dragged in and so was America after finding a message from Germany to Mexico to attack the USA. The USS Maine sinking also got the USA in. Russia backed out because they were having a revolution. Finally the allies won and all was well until the first United Nations (It was called something else but i forgot its name) made Germany go into a great depression. America prospered. WW2 started about 20 years after. I hope it helps, its just a rough sketch. Tell me what you get if you take my facts into your essay.

i think that the history channel now is coming of age and soon will be the big boy on the block for answers in the realm of there expertise in the fields that they have documented,something www.historychannel .com, which one of their show and they will show you the access and they have great stuff on ww1, all things are changing as far as how they have stored what about history, each country believe it or not had its own recorded way of seeing the world also, the medical way the influenza killed more people than the war, the poison gas stories about the war and the horrible death of mustard gas, there are every mans story to be heard would make understanding what the war was and all would be true

Your question is way to general. World War One lasted from 1914 to 1918. Germany under the Kaiser was the bad guy. The US got involved in 1917, kicked butt and ended in 1918. On the day it ended they made a holiday called Armistice day. Which later became veterans day.

As already mentioned check out wiki, but if you need more info or a higher level & quality of sources don't look past academic sources, they are the up most credible and in tertiary study, are generally the only ones studied.
