There is a vitamin that you can buy at any drugstore called L-ysine(sp?). I know that you take it daily, and it really does work. I used to have them about once a month around the time of my period and my pharmacist recommended that and have not had any since. That was 2 years ago. Hope this helps.
Not to worry. It is Herpes virus-1 not the gential kind. You can get cold sores without having Herpes virus -2 genital herpes.

Abreva is the only over-the-counter treatment that actually prevents the virus that causes the herpes (cold sore) virus from replicating successfully, which means it will stop the growth of a cold sore in its tracks. It usually costs around $17, but it's worth it because it will last you for a really long time and it will actually prevent cold sores from forming or getting worse. Use it as soon as you think you might be getting one. Read the directions carefully, you only need a small amount at a time. Squeeze slowly, or a bunch will come out and be a waste.

Try not to stress out ofcourse. Drink water and keep your lips protected. I use blisstex. There are many different kinds. It sounds weird, but my mom told me about every 3 months take a laxative and that will help you from getting cold sores and fever blisters. Cold sores are not like the VD herpes. you catch the vd, a cold sores is something in your body reacting. They are nasty I know, the better you take care of your body the less you will get. If you feel one coming start treating it as soon as you feel the tingle.

A previous answer of mine I though worth repeating:
Hope it helps you.
A cold sore is a herpes virus. The virus is always in your system, but tends to rear it's ugly head as an outbreakwhenever your body is stressed and isn't spending as much energy to supress it.
This is just the way it is and there's nothing you can do to stop it completely, but here are some tips.
Deal with the symptoms. Learn what it feels like when one is coming on and what products treat it best when you do get an outbreak.
Get your immune system in top condition. That means eating healthfully. Get lots of fresh fruits and veg., lean meats and drink plenty of water. Limit intake of soda, sugars, corn syrup, fried and high-fat foods, fake or man made foods, which are high in salt, sugar and hydrogenated fats.
Supplements-read up on them. L-Lysine is an amino acid that is very helpful in fighting off viruses. You should take a small amount on a daily basis and lots on days you have an outbreak or feel one coming on. Zinc, vit. C, and many other help the immune system. I"m sure there's plenty of info on line about them.
Antibiotics, while great for killing off bacteria, tend to stress the body, plus if you're taking them, your immune system is probably already busy fighting off something else.
During your period your body is working extra hard too. Eat well, drink water, eat foods high in iron (fresh spinach, green veggies, red grapes, raisins) and get extra rest.
Also, if you stay healthy, the outbreaks generally get fewer in frequency over time. I wish you the best.

I also get cold sores and they can be awful. I can tell when one is coming by the little tingle and itch that comes first. I use Carmex to keep it moist, it really hurts when they get dry. They are very contagious, so be care full not to kiss anyone or let them share your glass or fork, what ever. This may sound horrible, and granted it is, but not as bad as a full blown out break... When I first feel one, I bite through the skin or scrape it open.. It then will heal faster, I don't know why, but it works for me. You will skip the growing ozing blisters this way. The virus stays dormant in your body until something triggers it to flare up. For me it is lack of sleep, too much sun, and stress. Carmex is my personal wonder drug. If you get canker sores inside your mouth, rinse your mouth out with warm salt water, it doesn't hurt, in fact, it rids you of the pain so that you can eat.

Hope this helps you.

If those are the same as those small white circles you get in your mouth without herpes, which I get now and then. My mother would always tell me to use vitamin c.
