K, let us start over. He has another cat to run around with, which they do all the time. He has an enormous cat "habitat" that my husband built that's awesome with tons of s*** to scratch. They hate catnip, and EVERY wall gets scratched, not just one. Not to mention all my furniture.

Releasing scents onto whatever he/she's scratching to mark territory. Short and sweet of it.

One of mine does that, she is obsessed with reflections and will jump up at any wall that has a shiny reflection on it, nightmare when we are trying to eat dinner as the lights reflect off the cutlery. It's just normal cat behaviour for cats to scratch, but very annoying and destructive. If you are a cat owner it's just something you have to accept.

Cats typically scratch for two reasons:
1. To mark their territory. They release scents when they scratch.
2. To stretch out their paws. This makes them feel good and sharpens their claws at the same time.
Try getting a scratching post and putting it near the wall where the cat is scratching. Then whenever you catch him/her scratching the wall, redirect them to the post.

Do you react to it strongly?? Cats can be like kids in that they like all attention, even negative. My mom has a cat who's been scratching her door frames for 14 years now LOL! She gives him heck every time and he runs playfully away till next time. It's almost like a game to both of them. Someone once said he was marking territory, but after all these years I think he knows it's his house!

He's burning off energy and is in need of a good chase. Get the DaBird (feather on a wand) so he can chase it...otherwise another kitty partner! Our cat does that all the time, he's very lively.

Cats scratch things, they sharpen and file their claws this way. If he does it all the time, he is probably bored.

They are marking the wall with their scent glands in their paws. This declars it their territory in the animal kingdom. Even if you declaw the cat they will still do this.
