I dont knw if this is the case with my cat whom ive had for about 9 years. He keeps himself very clean and ive never had a problem of smelling any odors or such from him..

But ive noticed this week that theres a horrible smell coming from the cats rear area...Today he came and sat on the bed and then when he went off i saw a small dot of liquid on the bedsheet and it smelled awful...exactly the smell i had been smelling on and off from him this week. I have to take him to the Vet soon anyway he's due for his yearly shots but was wondering if this might be something to do with the anal glands filling up..

Hi there...cats can also have problems with their anal sacs becoming impacted. Cats with soft stools do not depress on the two anal sacs located on each side of the anus and they become impacted. Your cat needs to have a vet express the glands to relieve the symptoms.

Cats frequently have not got a difficulty with their anal glands, so it is somewhat uncommon. How is the cat's poop? frequently organization poops do sufficient pressing whilst the cat removes that the anal glands empty out in the technique. If the poop is purely too gentle it is not going to press on the glands because of the fact the cat makes use of the muddle field. Feeding a foodstuff that doesn't make the stool so gentle would clean up the concern of the impacted glands.

Overweight cats also have more problems in that area.
A vet can clean it out and give you advise (or medication, if needed) to keep them clear.
Good luck

yes... its called impacted sacs and it hurts. Cats will usually try to relieve the pressure by scooting their bum accross the carpet. The sacs are located on either side of the cat's anus. If you look, there are two tiny holes (look like dots) on each side of the anus. Vets press the sides of the openings to express what is inside. You should take kitty to the vet to have the problem taken care of.

Yes, they do. I had a cat that had the same problem. What happens is that the anal glands become obstructed and begin to fill up. They need to be drained. When we took our cat to the vet, he just squeezed the gland and the fluid shot out.

This became a repetitive problem for him and we had to have his anal glands removed. That solved the problem.

yes - their anal glands can become impacted. your vet may be able to show you how to release them yourself - i wasn't interested in learning myself because its really gross, but you may not be as big of a wimp as i am. i have one cat with this problem and one without - henery is too fat to properly clean his butt. also, long haired cats may have difficulty with this as well. my friend shaves around her cat's butt so oliver can clean it better - her husband was mad when he found her doing this with his electric razor, though.
