Steven Segal is a 7th Dan Black Belt in Aikido. He got this high because his first wife was Japanese and her father owned a Aikido Dojo. He was promoted quickly by his father-in-law because in Japan if your anything below yondan (4th degree) you ain't nothing and should not be teaching. This was told to me by Shihan Robert Ayoyagi 7th Dan Hawaii Aikikai.

There is a popular story about Segal being rough with the stuntmen on a movie set and Judo Gene Lebell wanted to teach him a lesson. So he choked out Steven Segal until he went unconscious. Some say he even crapped his pants? This was told to me by 4th Degree Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu Master John Machado who has worked with Segal in Under Siege 2.

But I'm sure Segal can kick my ***, so I'm just a keyboard warrior talking some trash about him and dropping names!

Well if anyone really knows MMA they would have herd the Story how Segal got choked out by Judo Gene LeBell a few years back. Segal was talking SHT and Judo Gene took him to the woodshed so to speak. (hehe)

I herd this story years ago from a Martial Arts guy and Joe Rogan also mentioned it on a UFC show (forgot which one), so its probably true.

That said he did teach Akido in Japan (saw that on his BIO), but Akido afa I know wont save you when someone GNP or puts you in a Judo Choke.

So he is not such a Bad *** IMO.

Steven Segal is extremely proficient in Aikido and I've seen videos of him taking out 10+ fighters in a single match (attacking one at a time though).

I've heard that while he's a pain in the butt to deal with and he's a bit of a girly man (very picky and neat, not sissy) he's a good martial artist and has a high pain tolerance. He actually does some of the stunts in his movies, for what that's worth. Though I've never seen any of his movies so I'm not one to judge.

Hes one of the highest ranked in aikido (not updated info here), and the interesting part is he was one of the first non japanese to reach that level, so yes, he is a badass. And to whoever said jean claude van damme is the real deal, my friend, he is not a martial artist. He was originally trained in gymnastics, he cant fight. Just ask chuck zito.

He got choked out in less then 30 seconds by Gene Labelle. He is a Judo that was working on one of Segal's movie sets a few years back.

yeah everyone hates a champion.i'll go and get my cup of tea my bickies and my knitting so i can sit around in the little tea circle and gossip with the ladies.
ss did'n't get given his rank because of his wife or anyone else.he happens to be well respected in japan and other asian countries to.and he also happens to be the only westerner to teach aikido in japan he didn't buy his dojo he built it up with his well earned reputation.judo gene lebell is a showman he'd do anything to get 5 minutes of fame and do you think ss would even bother refuting his claims?and im not knockin lebell either, stating a fact.
i'm not sure what your idea of a badass is but ss is the real deal when it comes to ma.he needs some acting lessons though.

You should ask his ex-wife Kelly LeBrock. He beat her around for a couple of years.
He claims to be an akido practitioner except they are supposed to be peaceful people and beating your wife is not really a peaceful or respectful act.
