your self-esteem?
I think freedom is freedom from things that overpower or enslave you...like addictions, or compulsive behaviors (lying, cheating, etc). In addition to being self-destructive, these things also lead to self-delusion... by making the effected person think it is a good thing, and they are "free", and do what they please. Any thoughts?

Summr, you do realize that not all Christian support the Bush regime, right? I'm a registered Democrat and liberal Christian. I don't know if your post is directed at me, or just making a statement. Either way, I'm letting you know.

People, please, this is not about law or government. This is a philsophical question.

Or your body and you soul? Or is freedom doing and saying whatever you want no matter who it hurts or harms. Freedom has boundaries and too often we forget. Our freedom ends where it crosses the line to deny someone else theirs.

I'm sure I could profoundly quote Satre here.... But that'd take too much effort, freedom is drastic freedom, and one is almost always fully free should they feel the need to put out the effort. Freedom does include doing as you please, even if it does ultimately destroy you, because that is ultimately your choice, now, a logical individual would chose against that in almost any situation. Likewise, the same applies to someone who has been lulled in by drugs and addictions, they ARE still free, they could break the addictions if they really so desired and tried hard enough to get away from them, so it is their own fault it continues, not anyone else's. People blame too much on others and their environments when they are, in fact, truly free.

Yes, freedom is freedom is freedom.
This is a HUGE difference in ideologies between social conservatives and social libertarians like myself.
From drugs to gambling to religion, I don't think it's right to interfere with someone's behavior, even if it's self-destructive.
I draw the line when you involve unwilling participants.
Speaking of which, you're a lousy stalker.
Following up with your clarification -- certainly a kind of liberation is being free of problems like addiction or bitterness or a bad habit. I would say that's a different KIND of freedom. There's freedom of action, which is to do anything you want even if it's self-destructive. And there's freedom of soul, for lack of a better term, which I think is what you describe.

the only true freedom is when Christ sets us free. Freedom does not give us the right to do anything that we want. Freedom gives us the opportunity to do what is right, in any given situation.
If we were free to do anything that we desire even if in the long run it is not good for us, or anyone else then we can become slaves to that thing to we do. But if we are free to do what is right, then the world would be a better place.

I think it is the freedom to make your own choices. People should be free to do whatever they want, even if it is self distructive if they are an adult. I don't need someone to take care of me. If I were to ruin my life due to drugs that should be my privelidge and I'd have no one to blame but myself, but I should have that right. When I have my government telling me what I can and can't put in my body, that is not freedom.

True freedom is to live in life or truth. And that also means not having any beliefs. Most people seek freedom in drugs-relationships-money etc. Look at a young child, pure freedom & happiness. They know that life is a play, one big wonder-full play.

You have complete utter freedom to do anything you wish to do. I stress anything. A person has the freedom to break away from dependency or to assume dependency on something. Morals don't really control, they just define who you are. You go around killing people, you are psycho. You go around helping everyone, then you are a kind(?) human being.
I do what I feel is the right thing on a regular basis everyday and people marvel at me. It is rather bizarre, especially since I try to keep to myself.

Freedom must include destroying bodies as that's what our God loving President just did to Saddam's body in the name of Freedom! Our pro-war, pro-life President who consulted the Prince of Peace before the war and was presumably told to go and kill. Praise the lord!

In the U.S. the courts have done a lot to assure freedom, not the robot soldier boys killing the other people.
