Perhaps alarmed is a bit strong but definetly proceed with caution and pay attention to the red flags........a 40 yr old man and never married could mean many things.......and could mean simply nothing.......maybe he just hasn't found the right woman. I would pay close attention to the relationship he has with his mother.........the mother/son relationship is usually quite telling.

Well I am 35 year old female and never married. I never wanted to get married. I also haven't dated anyone I wanted to marry. I have dated and had relationships though.
So, if this guy is like me do not be alarmed.
You will just have to find out why he hasn't married and get to know him well.

It depends maybe in the past he was picky or didn't want marriage and now maybe he's seeking some serious. I'd only be alarmed if he wanted to get married earlier or if he hasn't had any serious relationships.

I don't think so. One of my very good friends is a 51 year old male and he has never even had a date because he's very shy and reserved, but he is one of the sweetest guys I know. There could be something negative about him that explains it, but it could also be something very innocent, so I wouldn't worry unless you notice anything alarming,

The guy is probably not married because last year other girls were reluctant to date a 39 year old guy who never married.
