I guess I came in on this one a little late but, everyone's right, it is. Most religions have some sanctions on drinking but Islam's are among the tightest, not that that's bad, just a unique point.

Consuming any substance which clouds your judgement or impairs your mind is prohibited in Islam. Of course that includes beer since it contains alcohol, which clouds your judgement, dulls your senses, and makes you commit sins.

Yes, alcohol is prohibited, and yet tolerated in some Muslim countries. And you still do get 80 lashes in some places.

Yes, it is an intoxicant therefore making it haram. People often misunderstand this issue of intoxicants. However, alcohol or hamr is pretty clearly forbidden.
