Can you record a show off from tv without a dvd player, if you have a satellite dish?

Someone told me that you can record something off from tv, even though you don't have a dvd player, but you have a satellite. Is this true, if so, how? Thanks.

In order to be able To record anything from the TV you must have DVD recorder , VCR ,or Tivo connected to your TV .

I have the Dish Network DVR. I know I can record off something I have recorded onto the DVR onto my VCR. Don't know if I can do it directly, but I think I read that you can if the satellite is hooked up through your VCR first, then to TV.
