Firstly it's possible to keep a long-distance relationship, and many people have made it successfully to marriage and beyond. However you have to stay realistic, and understand that you can't be in love all the time.

Keep in touch with each other everyday. And I mean everyday. Share your thoughts and feelings. Or even a short email will do.
Talk to each other on the phone every once in awhile, just so you get to hear each others' voices.
Consider writing to each other too, nothing beats a hand-written letter. And send stuff to each other... little surprises that can make your sweetie smile (like pictures), or anything is possible you just have to find a more creative way of 'reaching' him/her.

LDRs are just like any ordinary relationship... sometimes you have time for each other and sometimes you just need time away from each other to make way for other priorities.
Communicate. Good communication is pretty much your backbone in this. That's just the most important thing.
Another thing is trust. Stay true to each other and everything will be just fine.

Good luck!

You actually go see each other every 4 to 8 weeks.

without that, the memory fades.
