In Christianity, the light is symbolic of the Holy Spirit coming to humankind on the day of Pentecost. So the flame is brought into a worship to signify the presence of God's Spirit with God's people. In the Old Testament, Isaiah encounters God seated on his throne and realizes his unworthiness as he states that he has unclean lips. The angel touched his lips with a coal from God's altar symbolically cleansing him of his sin. Also, the gospel of John uses the symbolization of light (fire in that era) signifying that God and light are good and guide believers in their daily walk.
