Training a puppy is easy. It's similar to rearing a child. Show him where to go when he wants to go to the toilet and he'll soon go to the right place. Our family had a Lassie type collie puppy when my sister and I were children. We had an enclosed yard which had an outside toilet. When ever the puppy did his business on sheets of paper Mother then took them to the outside toilet and flushed them in the usual manner. Soon the puppy caught on that this was where he had to go. When he was let out into the yard if he needed to go he'd go to the toilet and get up on the wooden bench and do his deposit into the bowl. A Jack Russell might be a bit small to do this type of thing. Any way I doubt many houses have the type of toilet we had in the mid nineteen forties. Since a Jack Russell is a small breed of dog, I'd suggest a litter box with sawdust ... maybe you can get some advice from your local pet shop. Start with the litter box on newspapers as he will take a bit of time to get used to going to the litter box. Once he gets the hang of it then you'll no longer need the papers. Don't lock him up on his own and dont let the children tease him. Playing is one thing but teasing is totally different. You'll probably get loads of different advice but the best people are those who work in pet shops or your vet. You could also ask about dog training classes in your area. Please remember a dog is for life ... it's not a Christmas present to be discarded when your son gets fed up with him and wants to do something else such as play with his computer or with his mates. Dogs are pack animals so think of your family as a pack and do your best to let you puppy find his place within the pack. He will need to realise he's not the leader of the pack ... he's just a young member but I'm sure you'll have no problems. Jack Russells are great fun. When I was working on the advance unit with a travelling circus there was a girl on our team who had a Jack Russell. One of the guys on the show also had a similar dog. They may be small but they are extremely energetic as they were originally used for hunting. I'm sure you and your family will get a lot of pleasure owning one of this breed. Good Luck with the house training

Go to the Library. There will be lots of books. There might even be a books on how to train a Jack Russell. A book that helped me was Puppy Preschool. Good luck.

Shouldn't be away from mom yet. Ask the breeder to take the pup back until it's 10 weeks.

Did you do any research before you bought this breed? JRT's are not known for being 'easy'. They catch on quickly but they need a LOT of physical and mental stimulation.

Step one is to understand the pup has been taken from his mom too young and is likely to have emotional problems because of it. Second you should crate train from DAY ONE!

Here's a great site that has thousands of pages of advice on how to raise a dog the right way: http://www.leerburg.com

Please understand that this is not going to be your son's dog, but rather the family dog.

Good luck!
