Ask the bridal shop to ship it to the hotel or home you'll be staying in in Japan, and don't try to take it on the plane. Unless you are flying in first class, you can't really bet on being able to hang a garment bag inside the plane, and even with a first class ticket, you're not guaranteed garment bag space. Contact the hotel and arrange a valet service for the dress; set it up before you arrive so they will be ready to steam or press or otherwise de-wrinkle the dress, and ask the bridal shop to pack instructions for doing so.

It's possible that you could get this safely across the ocean in your carry-on but since it is not a guaranteed thing, it's much better to ship it. Better to pay FedEx than to possibly have an unhappy surprise when you arrive!

You can ask the flight attendents to hang it with their stuff. Also, first class tends to get their own closets.

I almost did this (I had to ship my dress from Texas to Alaska), but decided to mail it last minute. I sent it with about two months before the wedding in case it took a long time to get there/got lost, but it arrived before I did! I've never had any mail lost that was insured. It would be a lot less of a hassle, especially since you're changing flights.

buy those clothes covers and ask them to hang it in the back. :-)
have the bridal store pack it for you, they will have the best materials to keep it from spoiling, and check with your hotel there that they can accomodate any bridal emergencies should the worst happen♥
Good Luck!
