There have been several of you who have answered...and you KNOW who you are...who seem to think I was implying that my son is ANY better than anyone else's. I NEVER implied that. And you will see that if you will REREAD my original question, because you mistakenly assumed (and you know what assuming does) that was my implication.
People DO NOT come here to be ridiculed. People come here for quick answers to a pressing question. I ONLY came here for an answer to my question, not to be insulted. Shame on you. Of course my son is VERY special to me...maybe even more special because he is my ONLY child. EVERYONE should feel as I do for their children. I asked the question for information, but more than that, out of concern for his welfare.
So, my question NOW is...what makes people so mean? Is it just because they can be, because this is SO anonymous a forum? If that is what your reasoning is, well......need I say more?????

In this day and age anything you ask or say some fool will ridicule you for it. Consider the source and forget it.
I understood exactly what you meant and tried to answer with understanding.
Only son or not he would go if his number came up.

I think you are right, some people just like to be rude and they know they can on here because it is anonymous and they know they can get away with it. I hate it when people are that way.
To answer your question about your son, I don't know if the laws have changed or not but they used to would not draft men if they were the only son in the family. They would start when the men and women that just got out of the military and call all of them back first, then they would start drafting men in families that had had 2 or more sons but wouldn't draft both of them. I hope and pray that they don't start up the draft again but it may happen and I hope the laws haven't changed to were the will draft a man that is the only son in the family. If I had an only son, or any sons for that matter I would hope the wouldn't get drafted.

There is no draft at the moment and has not been one for many years. And Bush and company just keep raising the reenlistment bonus's or enlistment bonus for the younger sort to be fooled into serving. It is a bribe.
But, the draft should be brought back and made to be universal for all kids during a certain ages. This is necessary to make sure that we have the tools to defend America in an equable fashion at times of need. Shared responsibility is the bedrock of a democracy. It is not just the poor or the lower middle class that needs to go to war for our Country, the rich and powerful also need to contribute their children to man a war situation just like everyone else.
If we as a society do not get this, then we will end up with an bad empire or a second rate Country. That is the stakes.
In fact, we need to insure that every American, man and woman does at least two years of public enterprise or military service. That way we all will get socialized by public responsibilities.

Certainly, if the draft ever gets reinstated, your son could be eligible if he meets the age requirements by the time it is reinstated. But to be honest, I wouldn't lose too much sleep over it. For one thing, it will be a few years at the earliest before it ever gets reinstated. Or likely more, since neither party has total control and neither party agrees on one damn thing. So by the time the draft rolls around, if ever, your son is probably going to be past the age limit. PLUS...a draft is done by drawings. Just because there is a draft going on, does not mean your son will necessarily be one of the chosen. Gosh. Please don't worry about this stuff. It is just not worth the anxiety. Not to mention, it hasn't happened yet and likely won't for a long time. And nothing you can do about it if it does. Put your energy into something positive and don't let this hang over your head. Focus on what's here right now. Your son and your happy life with him. ;)

Right now there is no draft but when I was in (usmc67-68) there was a draft & yes as an only child you can be drafted but can be exempt from a combat zone.I had inlisted so was never drafted.if they reinstate the draft the rules may change from what they use to be. I believe the young men now could use military service just to turn them into men at a younger age than 40 (still living at home with mommie)

Well, I didn't answer your question a mintue ago but I can tell you that people are mean.... My husband is in the Army currently deployed to Afghanistan. I miss him with all my heart, but I do know that it was he's choice to join the military just like it was my choice when I joined.... If they do reinstate the Draft then yes you're son could be one of the many young men and women that will be drafted... If not then so be it.

Let's hope it does not come to that. Yes, I do think if they reinstate the draft your son could very well be drafted. I know how you feel because I am a mother of young men too. I am praying for all of our children! God bless you and your son!

This is the Internet. 95% of the people on here say rude things because they know they're too coward to say rude things in person....In response to your question yes your only son can be drafted. He would only be exempt if you had other sons who died and he was the last one.

You are not exempt from military service simply because you are an only child or an only son. You are exempt only if one of your siblings or parents (mothers are now included as well) has died as a result of military service.
You do not have to be a sole remaining son to meet this requirement - the exemption applies to all remaining sons from qualified families.
This exemption is not in effect during wartime.

Ma'am, I did not read your original question, but will offer that many people on this website take things the wrong way, answer without reading your full intent, or are just plain mean.
Please don't take it personally. I've been posting for a while here and just let it roll off. Best of luck to you and your son.
