At the first sign of a cold or sore throat I start taking zinc lozenges. The zinc is supposed to lessen the duration of cold symptoms. Seems to work for me. I started with a sore throat/cold symptoms on a friday and by sunday my sore throat was gone and I felt much better. You need to let the lozenges dissolve (do not chew them) and it does take away or at least decrease the pain of the sore throat. You take one about every 3 hrs. or so.
Another thing I do for a sore throat that was passed down from my grandmother, is to take a bit of raw onion, chew and swallow. Yeah, I know, sounds gross and depending how bad of a sore throat you have, it can sting a bit. But it does work. Onion is supposed to have mild antibiotic type properties to it.
Some of the other things mentioned like lemon, hot water and salt, chicken soup, are good too but I find that the zinc and or onion soothes the pain for a longer time.

I'd hate to answer your question with something you didn't want to hear, but here it goes anyway.... Chloroseptic spray or strips work well for the immediate relief of the pain and you should try Cold-ezze lozenges to knock out the cold. Those lozenges are amazing to me but be careful not to use anymore than 3 per day. They're potent and don't exactly taste like candy. I'd keep them in the glove box for whenever you feel something coming on in the future. Also... that sore throat is a prelude to worse things in the very near future in your upper lungs. You should get something quick to knock out all that mucuse from your nose that's dripping into your lungs all night while you're sleeping; anything that'll dry up your nose is fine. Good luck.
