waiting a year or so he plans on going to a community college to start anyway to save money will this hurt him

That's not a good idea a GED is definitely not as good as a diploma. If he is 17 he is close to graduating he should just wait. On a resume a diploma looks better.

Not a good idea at all. If he has the ability to finish high school he will be a lot better off, and better yet, at least 2 years of college after that. He can get a degree in sniffing ---- and do better than anybody with a high school diploma or GED, it doesn't mean that's what he'll be doing the rest of his life but it shows determination and he has a formal education. Two years at State U looks better than GED on any job application. Good Luck.
