she does not really drink or do drugs or anything like that. she takes no medication that would make her tired. she went to sleep at 3am last night and woke up at 5pm today.

Well first off sleeping at 3am isnt very healthy. Your friend probably slept that long because her body wasnt used to sleeping so late,so sleeping that long was her bodies way of getting all those hours of sleep in. If she does that all the time she probably has a problem. I have insomnia and if i sleep at 3am i get up at 5pm as well....but I also cant fall asleep without medication.

First how long has this been going on. It can be a simple as she has mono and mono makes ya sleep a WHOLE LOT. if its been happening for like years it could be either a deficency in certain nutriants her body needs. Another factor can be why was she up at 3am did she do a whole lot of stuff the day before therefore her body shut down and went into a long sleep cycle, that has happened to me before and my body just needed a long rest. besides that if those answers dont help out then i dont know what will....maybe she just likes to sleep alot

are we talking 3am monday and up at 5pm monday or what?
while that is 14 hours of sleep the question remains how many hours prior to that was she awake?
an excessive desire to sleep is often a sign of depression.
does she use drugs or drink?
perhaps it could also be mono.
sounds like a trip to the doc is in order.

That's called hypersomnia and can be caused by a number of things. Did this just begin in the last couple months? Check out seasonal affective disorder. Sleeping much more than usual is a common symptom of it.
