If she wants to gauge her ears, she should do it the correct and safe way and not just use whatever she finds. Tapers are necessary for stretches, if you just shove larger size jewelry in the ear, the hole will probably tear and look like a butthole later on. Her better bet would be to go to a piercer or the body jewelry stands in most local malls and find small stretching kits or even ckeck online for them.

She needs to know that any odd or overwhelming pain and bleeding is a sign something is wrong. Generally, ears will sting from stretching, but with a few days time, this should go away. Never should you experience severe swelling or bleeding. Often the sight of puss will indicate infection and trauma.
She should read here for more information and advice:

My friends use belly rings in their ears all the time as ear rings, they look cool because they aren't the blah stud or sometimes annoying dangle. I even got on shortened down at a jewelry store to go in my cartilage while they were on sale one time, I love it! The look of the ball and a gem is so cute just don't go for one with a dangle. Do something sparkly or a really brightly colored fun ball for the ends. Have fun with it and stay classy. Jewelry rings have many uses, not just what they are called.

She needs to take it out and enable it heal, a cm of dermis isn't deep sufficient to hold a piercing. If she leaves the earring in there because it heals her physique will push the jewelry out and she or he will finally end up with a scar. maximum physique piercing pass somewhat (migrate) and once you get your abdomen button pierced it incredibly is performed with a hollow 14 gauge needle that actual removes a small piece of tissue leaving a clean hollow that would heal correct and carry jewelry. Navel piercings are low-fee if she needs it accomplished she needs to purely fork over the $40 and get it accomplished correct by skill of a good piercer. word: a ordinary earring is purely 20gauge, a bellly button ring is 14 gauge - lots better, she would desire to in no much extra healthful a real abdomen button ring in the hollow with out ripping the tissue thoroughly.

Go to a tattoo/piercing place. If you buy the new jewelry there (what ever gauge she will be needing), they will put it in for her using this tube that is the size she is currently wearing at one end and the gauge of the new jewelry at the other. When that jewelry starts getting loose, go back to move up another size. This is probably the safest way to do it, and jewelry meant to stretch the ears looks a lot better in my opinion.

DO NOT use anything to gauge ANY part of your body unless you have a taper. You will be sorry if you do. It could end up looking like a cat's ***hole (for lack of a better comparison)
You could seriously damage your earlobes. You need to go size by size, so if her ears are not stretched at all, you need to start out with a taper to a 14g, let it heal for about 4 weeks, then you can stretch up to a 10 gauge.
Please use a taper, or go to a professional to risk damaging your body, I have seen ripped lobes, torn lobes, and SERIOUS problems as a result of self-stretching...

you guys need to get your terminology correct. generally speaking if the jewelry is surgical stainless steel it can just about anywhere in your body.
there are captive beads which require openers and closers. there are circular barbells which most people call horse shoes. curved barbells, and barbells.
when it comes to stretching ears you should always start with something that is surgical stainless steel and after it heels you can switch to any material. i have my ears stretched to a 2g and wear wood hooks in them. i agree with several of the other people, go to a professional because there are chances of tearing and because of this you should have your jewelry sterilized.
sorry about the rant i'm just passionate about piercings.

I have seen someone use the teeth from a comb. I think she'll be fine using belly button rings.

I have a 14 gauge in my cartiledge piercing. I wouldn't recommend anything bigger than 12 for her to still look 'nice.' Anything bigger on a pretty girl, and they just start to look trashy.

well you've got to buy a gauge. it'll work better then a bellybutton ring. they have different sizes on it and it'll hurt but the end product is great. you should be able to get them at a lot of places. spencers or hot topic always have them.
