Trying to find out how rank works.
Is possible for an Army Corps Engineer to be of a higher rank than USMC Sergeant or an USAF Major? Can they Order them to do some thing like guard a post or help fix some thing?

I have no exposure to the military except to tell the one solider thanks for a lecture on Photoshop that I attended 3 years ago.

First of all, assignment to the Corps of Engineers is similar to being assigned to a regular unit, to recru iting duty, or a training environment. Normally each unit has a structure with one person in charge. It is exceptional for one leader in an organization to step outside that organizational structure to "order" another. Having said that, there are orga nizations that are "Joint Service" . In other words, they are mixed and an Army Major might be in charge of a Navy Ensign and perhaps the Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt that works for the Ensign. All of these active duty service members are subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice which requires that they follow the lawful orders of superiors in their chain of command.

Are you talking about a Department of the Army Civilian working for the Corps of Engineers or a soldier working for he Corps? Actually it really doesn't matter becuase the answer could be yes either way. It is not uncommon for soldiers working with something like the Corps of Engineers or at an Army Depot to work for a civilian. If the USACE person happened to be a soldier they they could be most any rank and could easily outrank a sergeant or a major.

Today the US Army Corp of Engineers is mostly made up of civilian employees. There are some military members but not many. One web site that you might want to visit for more information is the hiring website. This will tell you job descriptions for anything that they are hiring for and you might be interested. The website will also tell you where there are openings.

... if that question got butchered anymore. i'd have to cry.

Army Corp of engineers = general job area. = group of.. engineers. rank isnt even MENTIONED.

USMC Sgt... is outranked by anything over.. a SGT.
USAF Major.. you just switched to officers now.

Rank is structered in all the branches, where all of the branches use the same basic structure. just semi different names on the enlisted side, and partially on the officer side.
enlisted goes from
private => Sgt Major of the ---- *--- = branch of service *
Officers go
2nd LT >> General of the ---- * --- branch of service *
although there hasn't been a 5 star general in a very long time..
