Even Biblical scholars are not sure.
Saint Mary Magdalene was the first witness to the resurrection of Jesus. (See the 20th Chapter of the Gospel of John).
She was one of Jesus' followers during his ministry, and was present at the cross when he died.
There is some debate on whether she is the woman in Luke 7 who was a notorious sinner. Most biblical scholars believe that Mary Magdalene was not the notorious sinner.
The 8th chapter of the Gospel of Luke describes Mary Magdalene as being healed and supporting Jesus' ministry out of her means.
With love in Christ.

For many contemporary Christians, the confusion between Mary Magdalene and the "Woman of Ill Repute" does not degrade her.
Christianity has a messiah born in a barn, who enters Jerusalem on a donkey, and is killed as a criminal. Jesus associates with tax collectors, and defends a woman to be stoned for adultery.
The repentant prostitute becoming a trusted follower of Jesus is a powerful image of the faith, that is consistent with these other incidents.
Looking down on a former prostitute is something the Pharisees would do, not something Jesus would.

At the time the Roman church was considering making priesthood celibate, they had a lot of put-downs on women, and dcided that Mary, Jesus' mother, was the only good woman in that time. It was because of Augustine's Confessions, where he blamed sex for all the bad things he did, so some people tried to abolish sex altogether. I was once told, as a child, that even between husband and wife, it was sin, which is not what te Bible says. I asked, why then, did God tell them to increse and multiply and fill the earth, if it was a sin? No one had an answer at that time. I finally got tired of the nonsense, and found a Bible church to go to.

actually.... I think it says Jesus cast 7 demons from her
lemme check
Mark 16:9
[ ((The most reliable early manuscripts and other ancient witnesses do not have Mark 16:9-20.)) ] When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had driven seven demons.
Luke 8:2
and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out
itis probably interpretive to say she was a woman of ill repute... but she was really messed up before Jesus straightened her out...
In the end Mary Mag is a trophy of grace to the glory of God who can make bad men good and bad women good as well

The Catholic church teaches that she was the woman taken in adultery. This is not a clear cut fact taken from the bible. Mary was the woman whom Jesus cast seven devils out of and the woman who poured oil on his feet and wiped them with her hair while her tears fell on them, while Judas complained because the oil that she used was very expensive. Jesus told him to leave her alone because what she was doing was in preparation for his burial. This is told as a memorial to her.

Very large question. I don't think that most Christians think of her as a former prostitute but as a follower of Jesus. Constantine made a few adjustments to the bible and most people of that time were close minded and easily brainwashed. Some people even think that they had a child named Sara together and that they escaped to France...all open to individual research and beliefs.
