I smoked for 29 years .. the think that made me give up was having a stroke at 44!

the best way is to want to give up .. cut down gradually in quantity and strength if you can't give up straight away and set a target of say 4 or 6 months to finish completely .. and stick to it!!

I smoked for 30years tried to give up many times, finally kicked the habit 12 months ago using patches, you have to be in the right frame of mind, when I finally stopped I new before I started on the patches that I was going to succeed, I set a date and found it quite easy.

If you fail keep smoking for a while and then try again. Good luck

Well, i am now on day 4 of being a non smoker. I am doing it cold turkey and basically changing my habitls ie, not going down the pub or into smokey cafes. Gradually I will start to reintroduce myself back into those situations but think I will start by having a couple of glasses of wine in the house first see if I can do it but I want to take it slowly to increase my chances of succeeding. I stopped for 4 months last year and was really anoyed when I started up again. I need to tell myself that people who do smoke are not lucky, they have an awful addiction and they are continuing to do harm. My boyfriend went to hypnosis which really worked initially for him but he started again. It would have been helpful if he had went back for another session of the hypnosis but he didnt and as a result is still hooked. Hypnosis yes but 3 to 4 months down the line you need to go back for a "top up". Good luck.

Admit that it is not easy but it is not impossible. try not to stick just to one thing as it may fail. The will power is absolutly necessary but not sufficient. First days and weeks are critical; you think that you will never be able to forget about it as you think that you will have the same cravings for the rest of your life. Gradually, it goes. I have heard cases of succes with any of the methods u said; so depends how u want to do that. My only suggestion is that do not do it at an stressful time. Rather, start it at a time that you are experiencing something pleasent, a holiday, a trip or something. I am sure you will do that; My friends never believed that one day i can quit. now i have not smoked for more than a decade and lots of them, who used to tease me, are smokers! All the best! u r not alone, warm wishes are with you!

I stopped smoking nearly 10 years ago, after having smoked for 45 years. I didn't use any kind of replacement nicotine, I used only my willpower and believe me, it was extremely hard to do, but as I had suffered with chest problems most of my life, I really didn't have any option, my breathing had become so bad, my doctor told me, that if I didn't stop smoking, I would die and that thought terrified me. I remember that day so clearly, it was Friday 13th February, I stopped and I honestly have not had a cigarette since then.

I hate to admit it but, I smoked for 26 years!!

What helped me was obviously will power but, chewing gum, I threw out everything to do with cigarettes and stayed away from the pub.

Every time I wanted a cigarette I would breath in really deeply for a few minutes. Sometimes it made me a little heady.

For the first 2 weeks everybody hated me and I hated them! Once the cravings subsided I was calm again.

I went minutes at a time and congratulated myself, I gave myself goals to get to and put pictures up of holidays that I wanted.

I saved all the money I spent on cigarettes and bought myself a car!

I wish you all the best of luck.

Allen Carr's Easy Way to Stop Smoking, it un does all the brainwashing that surrounds smoking, withdrawal etc I read this book and stopped immediately as did, my boyfriend and all my friends and family, you don't need will power once you've read this, the only thing you need is to really want to stop. All the best!

There is this item they made a couple of years back that you suck on once when you feel th need to smoke, it then makes the cigarette taste nasty so you don't want it again for a couple of hours. When you get the erge again suck on the item, I forgot the name of it but its supossed to work.

Cutting your hands off might make smoking a tad inconvenient. That, or every time you feel like a cigarette, perform fellatio on your partner. That'll make up for the moods you're going to be in.
