Use neutral colors on the walls, flooring and furniture. Light blues and chocolate brown look great together on bedding. Use lots of lamps and candles for lighting. And if you have a t.v in your bedroom, keep it in a cabinet so you can conceal it. Mix lots of types of plush fabrics like chenille, silk and linen to give the room a custom look. And whatever you do, don't buy furniture in a set. Mix different pieces that you like. they don't have to match. As a matter of fact, having a mixture of pieces will give a high end custom look as well.

For a relaxing atmosphere in the bedroom, first of all it must be clean. It must be tidy, that is, few items on any surface. Three or fewer items on top of any surface, no more.
Color must be solid and cool, such as blue tones. Warm tones such as brown, red cause excitement, not relaxation. Pastal colors such as pink or yellow does help relaxation.
Walls should have a minimum of accessories such as art or photographs rather than many.
Light from outside should be kept down. (Therefore plants would not do well in the bedroom.)
If you were into feng shui I would say hang crystals. Do not put a mirror up that reflects your bed. Do not place your bed where the foot is near the exiting door. Never use plastic plants. Fish Aquariums would do better in another room.
Use insense that is relaxing to you. Candles can create a very relaxing ambiance but too many may cause excitement.
Mood music helps relaxation as does reading.
Relaxation is aided when all your senses are active.

It depends on what you consider a peaceful and relaxing environment. If your style is zen then pick up a Feng Shui book. I know running water is a must and also placement of furniture is taken very seriously. but if you like hardcore rock then some dark colors and poster may relax you. For me, personally, I enjoy a spa like atmosphere with lightly draped curtains, stark white bed linens, a bit of bamboo or other plants that take little care. Also keeping the clutter out is a must. If you are a feminine type then a little lace may help. Finish the room with candles and an air freshener.
I always make my bed in the morning. I know it sounds silly but it is so much more relaxing coming into a clean and finished room.
Good Luck and have fun!

Start with calm and soothing colors of your choice. Avoid heavy, dark colors that depress the mood. Choose lightweight, airy fabrics. I always loved billowing white curtains.
Next choose soft lighting. Touch lights are nice because you don't have to interrupt to switch off the lights.
Make sure the room is warm but not too hot.
Buy big, ankle-length fluffy robes for both sexes.
Have extra pillows that are extra soft. Thick but soft comforter is nice.
I always imagine a 4-poster bed too.........

No television, soothing meditation style music if any, and black out blinds. Less is better, your eyes are closed most all of the time. No distractions, and maybe just a soothing light green for paint. Studies show it is the most soothing color for the mind.
