There is no way a program on your computer could cause a modem to exceed its physical limitations of 56K. Just get DSL. All your downloading is spyware that will slow down your computer.

Download FlashGet. It's a "freeware" download manager that breaks all of your files up in to cells so that you can download parts of a file or files simultaneously. The latest version also comes with torrent support and other cool and useful features. I highly recommend this software for all user types (IE: dial-up/cable/dsl etc).
