Although you hate going to the doctor I would make another app. 1st thing in the morning. It could be this flu bug that it going around. antibiotics only work on bacterial infections not viral infections. It could be that the infection has spread to your lungs causing a respiratory infection. It could be a hundred thing no one can tell you over the computer what is wrong only a licensed physician can diagnose. Although it doesn't sound like mono I would still get it checked. Hope you feel better soon.

The best way to reduce the discomfort of sore throat is to take pain meds like Tylenol or Advil (acetominofen or Ibuprofen).

Warm beverages and soups are also soothing to the throat.

Gargling with warm salt water is effective at soothing and also for helping to reduce the viral infection. Good oral hygiene when you are sick is also good -- brushing your teeth and using antiseptic mouthwash (like Listerine brand) are helpful to reduce the level of viruses in your mouth.

There are also tons of products such as throat lozenges and throat sprays that are soothing. For lozenges, I have found that the most effective active ingredient is:
hexylresorcinol
But there are not very many products that have it. Instead you will probably be able to find products containing other active ingredients.

The brand Cepacol is generally the most effective lozenges available (in the USA). Here is their website:

I have been sick for 2 weeks also. MIne started as a throat problem and then moved to my nose, now my lungs are congested but the other 2 are gone. I think it is this cold/flu that is going around. It is very persistant.

Hate to say it but I would go do the doc. Not emergency doc, just make an appt. during the day. It does sound to me like you still have something that may need atibiotics for curing. Hope you feel better soon!

Go back to the doctor, whatever you had just moved into your chest which could very well turn into pneumonia.
