Get the dog to vet! There should be an emergency/after hours place in your area. Sounds like he's choking on something

You really should first have your dog's health checked by a vet. An abscess or decayed tooth could be the problem. While you're there, have the vet show you how to properly brush your dog's teeth, because this is a very effective method of removing plaque (I know, because I regularly brush my Chinese Crested Hairless's teeth twice a week). Dog biscuits, rawhide bones or the equivalent, and good-quality kibble dog food are also essential for healthy teeth and gums. Finally - and this is an easy and inexpensive way to sweeten a dog's breath - give your dog a handful or two of washed and drained lettuce with its evening meal several times a week. Most important of all is to begin with a visit to the vet - untreated dental problems can lead to far more serious health issues in dogs (just as in humans). Good luck to you and your dog!

It sounds like you're describing "kennel cough". It's a bacterial infection of the upper respiratory system that causes a hacking, unproductive cough whenever the dog exerts itself. Sometimes the coughing can be so severe that the dog vomits.
One way to check for kennel cough is to place the flat of your fingers against the base of the dog's throat and push in slightly. If the dog starts coughing, it's probably kennel cough.
We suggest that you take the dog to the vet to make sure of a diagnosis, however. Kennel cough is highly contageous but is easily treatable.

Did he eat grass? Probably just has an upset tummy. If you think it's choking on something, that is a whole different issue. Make sure there is nothing in his mouth or throat. If all clear, just let him puke, he'll probably feel better. If he vomits to much, make sure you have a vet check him out. Good luck.

Check to see if he is still breathing. If he is, then he isn't choking (thank god!). He may have eaten something that he can't digest, and this is the only way for his body to get rid of it. Let him eat some grass. As gross as it sounds, it will help him get whatever he is trying to get out come out. If this happens frequently, get him checked by the vet. There may be something seriously wrong.

This may be bloat WHICH your dog can die from in about 30 mins. Take him the immediately. It may turn into unbearable pain for him. Bloat, by the way, is when the stomach rotates inside the dog.
Extremely painful. GO now.

Is it a large breed (especially those with a deep chest)? If it is go to the vet now! Unproductive retching is a huge sign that the do is bloating, and it can be deadly if not treated immediately.

If he does it often and he seems fine afterward he might be reverse sneezing. It sounds and looks like they are choking or gagging but it is totally harmless. There is abslutely nothing you can do about. It looks and seems much worse than it is.

Try giving him a piece of bread. If there is something stuck in his throat, it will help push it down.
