It is in the book of Revelations in the Bible that when the anti-Christ is born he shall bare the mark of 666.

Here is a Neutral Scientific Explanation:

~666 is referred to as the Number of the Beast in the Book of the Revelation (see Revelation 13:17-18).
Since the "sine of the Devil" sin (666°) = -1/2 times the golden ratio, this expression has been paraphrased by the humorous quip "The sign of the devil is the opposite of good, but only half as strong." Note that (sin 306°) and (sin -54°) are mathematically synonymous with (sin 666°).~

Here is the Biblical Christian Explanation:

~Revelation 13:17-18 (American Standard Version)
17 and that no man should be able to buy or to sell, save he that hath the mark, even the name of the beast or the number of his name.
18 Here is wisdom. He that hath understanding, let him count the number of the beast; for it is the number of a man: and his number is Six hundred and sixty and six.~

Many non believers should take note to this: We Christians do not fear the beast but pity his existence. So many anti-Christians think they can scare us with their 666 and black clothing etc (had some "Wicca" friends in high school). When there is Christ there is no fear. Fear is a lie and a sign of weakness. I refuse to be weak and I refuse lied to or manipulated by such a pathetic being.

No idea. Because the Bible states, in the exact verse where it is mentioned, that it is a man's number.

"Here is where wisdom comes in: Let the one that has intelligence calculate the number of the wild beast, for it is a man’s number; and its number is six hundred and sixty-six." - Revelation 13:18

A few things that Revelation says about itself, which must be kept in mind.

Unless otherwise stated, or indicated, what is presented within the book are in signs. - Revelation 1:1

The contents of the book are for, and occur in the Last Days. - Revelation 1:10

Much of the rest of the Bible can be used, to interpret what those signs mean. For instance, throughout the book of Daniel, and at Daniel 7:17; we learn that when God uses beasts in visions, these represent kingdoms and governments.

7 is a number used in the Bible to denote complete holiness. For instance, God’s creative week comprises seven ‘days,’ or extended time periods, during which God completely accomplishes his creative purpose regarding the earth. (Genesis 1:3–2:3) God’s “sayings” are like silver that has been “clarified seven times,” thus perfectly refined. (Psalm 12:6; Proverbs 30:5, 6)

Six is one short of seven. Would it not be a fitting symbol of something imperfect, or defective, in God’s eyes? (1 Chronicles 20:6, 7) Moreover, six repeated three times, as 666, powerfully stresses that imperfection. That this is the correct view is supported by the fact that 666 is “a human number,” as we have considered. Thus, the beast’s record, its “human number,” and the number 666 itself all point to one unmistakable conclusion—gross shortcoming and failure!

And it's attached to a beast, or a government, of men.

That number is the number assigned to man that has completely and totally surrendered himself or herself to Satan. There is a prophetic character soon to come on the world scene creating miracles, promoting world peace, eradicating hunger etc... that will give a 7 year peace to Israel and break the treaty in 3 1/2 years, called the Man of Perdition along with the false prophet and his false religion also called the Beast! He will start a Middle East War, described as the king of the North directly north of Jerusalem on a map. He will destroy the New temple in Jerusalem and will sit in the Temple himself as God and proclaim himself to be God. He is thought to be of European descent..Matthew 24, Revelation 9, Daniel Chapters 11-12. Daniel 11 give the character and descriptiion of what he will be like and do in verses 22-45

Read Revelation chapter 13. The chapter describes the antichrist and his powers.

Here is the last verse (18):
18This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man's number. His number is 666.

This is the NIV. The beast is clearly a man, if you read the entire chapter.

This is taken from the Book of Revelation in the New Testament, and it is a reference to identifying the Beast "let those with wisdom understand, for the number of the Beast is the Number of Man, and that number is six hundred sixty and six" [pp].

So the number is related to the Beast, which some refer to as Satan, and others as Satan's progeny (so to speak).
