Be thoughtful and think about what he is interested in. My wife wants a list during birthdays and Christmas, but I think that's cheating... THe art of giftgiving is to be thoughtful and pay attention to what the person wants. OR, prepare something special for you and him to share: special homemade meal or something personal.

depends on how long you've been going out with him for
if a long time, get him something useful and expensive because if you've gone out like only 1 month then you guys MIGHT break up and you'll regret blowing off $300 for him.
