Sophocle's Oedipus saved Thebes by answering the riddle of the Sphinx that was terrorizing the city: "What walks on four legs in the morning, two legs in the afternoon, and three legs in the evening?": Man, as a baby man crawls on four legs; as an adult walks on two legs; when old, man uses a cane.
He was rewarded with the throne of Thebes and the widowed queen Jocasta's hand in marriage.
Note: You modified the latter part of the riddle though with "...1 at night". Is this a different riddle?

Human/Man, because he crawls on all fours in the morning (the beginning) of his life; two legs in his adult life and uses a cane (one leg) in his old age.

an unfortunate person- in the beginning on 4 limbs, during life walk on two and.... somehow losing their one leg later in life...LOL i just read the whole riddle....whoops...
