I gave a puppie to my sister-inlaw, who lives across the street. I wanted her to bring it over to visit its mom, but she is worried that it will confuse the puppie. The puppie is only 7 1/2 weeks old. I regret giving it to her so early because I know now that the puppie should be learning things from its mom still. Do things like this confuse the puppies?

Your first instinct was right: you shouldn't have given the pup up so early. But what's done is done... Exactly why do you want the puppy to visit the mom? Is it to make the pup feel better or to help you feel less guilty about letting it go so young?

Unless the puppy is showing signs of stress from being away from its mom, we would suggest that you NOT have it visit the mom until after mom's milk has dried up and the pup is a little older (and fully vaccinated). If it goes back to the mom now on a visit and tries to nurse, and she doesn't recognize it, she may attack it to keep it away from her. And if the pup isn't fully vaccinated yet, it can get illnesses from the mom (or other dogs in the home). If you must have the dogs visit, make sure they're properly supervised at all times so they're safe.

No, it won't confuse it. If the puppy will be living across the street, I would suggest your sister-in-law let the puppy come visit the mom more often so that it can keep learning from her. When the puppy is about 12 weeks old, then you can stop having it come over so often, unless of course they like each others company. Most mother dogs are glad to be rid of the babies beyond 12 weeks of age and the puppy will have learned about everything it can from mom by then. It will learn soon enough that your sister-in-laws house is home and your home is just for visiting.

No, it won't confuse the puppy. However, the mother may not want anything to do with the puppy. The puppy will have new scents on it which may make the mother turn away.

I GOT MY PUPPY A LITTLE OVER 2 YEARS AGO AT 7 WEEKS OLD AND 1 WEEK LATER-HE MET HIS MOTHER AGAIN AND SHE ATTACKED HIM--IN THE VETS OFFICE. THE VET SAID THAT MY PUPPY DIDN'T BELONG TO THE "PACK" ANYMORE AND HIS MOTHER NOW SAW HIM AS A THREAT TO THE REST-DOGS ARE NATURALLY PACK ANIMALS, LIKE WOLVES, SO IT WON'T CONFUSE THEM BUT THE MOTHER MAY NOT WANT THE PUPPY AROUND ESPECIALLY IF THERE ARE STILL SOME OF HER PUPS WITH HER.
