What should we look for (we want a 32" horizontal-type widescreen); WalMart has one that's around $ 600 (more or less), but I don't know if it's a TV or a monitor.

It's true that Wal-Mart employees will not likeley be able to tell you correctly how to hook up your TV, but if the price is right, the price is right. That is a really cheap price for a TV that can display HD signals.

What you need to know is that most everyone that utilizes an HDTV uses a digital cable box or a satellite box to receive their HD signals. This means that a HD monitor will suffice. If you are going to use a box, you probably will never use the built-in tuner that comes on HDTVs. It is for over-the-air signals. Think of it as the same as a TV from the seventies that has the UHF and VHF hookups on the back, if you wanted cable, you needed a box and you never changed the channel on the TV, you changed it on the cable box. We are seeing the same thing with HD signals. A HD cable box or a satellite box will be all you need for an HD monitor or an HDTV.

If you're looking for a new HD TV, stay away from wal-mart. They don't have any knowledge on what they do, or even how to hook them up. You'll buy your TV, but you won't be able to watch it because you were not educated to hook it up correctly. Shop at someplace where they have a better selection and knowledgeable sales people.

The difference between an HDTV and a monitor is and HDTV possess an ATSC tuner, which is needed to receive digital/HD content over-the-air via antenna. A monitor lacks this tuner but if you hook it up with an HD source, the HD monitor will be able to display an HD image. The HDTV's do cost more because of that tuner, but in about two years when the world switches to HD, you won't need an HD cable box to view HDTV. As with a monitor, you're always going to need an HD tuner such as a cable box.

I hope this Helps!

Sometimes these terms are used interchangeably for newer displays. A monitor does not have a tuner built in, so the source would have to come from a set top box. With a monitor you cannot get over the air HD. A monitor might not have speakers either.

You should look for the inputs that you may want to use like HDMI or whatever else.
