I can't even tell you how much resistance training helps but here are just a few:

increases the resting metabolic rate. which means your body will burn more calories at rest. studies have proven that over a 24hr period a session of resistance training will cause the body to burn more calories than the same amount of time spent doing cardio alone. this is why resistance training and cardio are essential tools in fat loss

increases insulin sensitivity. the body will secrete less insulin to metabolize nutrients.

increases muscle bone density. very important for women as they are prone to osteoporosis.

increases muscle and ligament tensile strength. your body will be less like to suffer injury

increase testosterone production. the more biologically active muscle tissue you have the more calories your body will burn at rest

increase growth hormone secretion. growth hormone is the most powerfull fat burning substance that the human body produces

it releases endorphins. these are the feel good hormones which attribute to the "high" associated with strenuous excerise

This is one of those yes and no questions. Muscle burns more calories than fat to survive each day as far as your basic number of calories you need just to survive, so using weights is a great way to get lean long term. In the short term, they will make you lose inches fast, but you will gain at first. That is because while muscle is smaller on the body than fat, it also weighs more than fat. Expect to put on five to ten pounds lifting with diet before you start losing. Keep in mind though that you will be looking much better, but that is because the scale isn't always the best answer of what is a good place for a person to be as far as body appearance goes. Good luck!

Yes, working out and exercising help a person to lose weight and gain muscle. However, keep in mind that muscle weighs more then fat when reading the scale. Also, make sure you life appropriatly. Lifting too little won't do any good and lifting too much too quickly can do harm as well. If you have any more questions, ask a gym teacher, parent, or coach for more advice! Good luck!

Lifting weights is anaerobic exercise and actually serves to increase muscle mass and tone. If you do several reps in your work out and keep your heart rate at an elevated state for more than 10 minutes you will start to burn calories. As you burn calories you are now into an aerobic work out. The tricky thing is that muscle weighs more than fat does. So you will lose weight as your body consumes its fat stores but once it starts replacing it with muscle mass you will gain weight.

The best way to lose weight is to watch your daily caloric intake. You need to determine what your bodies REE is. Your REE is your remedial energy expenditure and is the amount of calories your body burns when you do nothing at all. It is based on height, weight, and age. So, if your REE is 1600 calories a day and you are on a 2000 calorie a day diet you will have an excess of 400 calories. Each 1000 calories equals 1 pound of body fat. So you need to find away to burn your excess calories every day. Everything you do burns calories. Just typing this answer consumed about 50 calories or so.

Your best bet is to count calories and be certain that you are burning all that you consume if you want to maintain your weight, burn more than you consume if you wish to lose. Working out is great and I suggest push ups as they work several major muscle groups in your body at one time.

Good luck.

any physical activity which a person does above and beyond their normal endurance will burn calories. It takes at least 15 to 20 min of physical activity before actual fat burning takes place. Various types of excercising burns different amount of calories per minute. Weight lifting would be classified as very high intensity and a person weighing 120-139# would burn an estimated 11 calories per min. Someone weighing 200-219# would burn 22 cals per min. 300-219# would burn 33 cal per min.

These are an approximate burn rates. There is no true way to actually calculate the actual calories burned thru excercise.

3500 calories equals 1 pound of body fat. NOT 1000 as someone else stated. and to determine how many calories you need to cut from your diet to lose weight you need to take your starting weight:

EXAMPLE: 200 pounds
for a woman multiply that by 11
for a man multiply that by 12
For a woman that totals 2,200 calories needed to maintain her current weight of 200 pounds.

Now, take your goal weight that you would like to be.

EXAMPLE: 130 pounds
for a woman mulitply by 11 and that equals
1,430 calories a day

after you get to your goal weight, subtract your current weight from your goal weight and you will get 770.

770 calories needs to be cut from the current diet to reach your goal weight.
