It is an interesting phenomenon that we see in Geriatric Medicine that when a couple have been together for many many years, the death of one spouse is often followed by the death of the other spouse within 12-24 months.
The idea of death from a "broken heart" seems to be a very old one. A recent BMJ article looked at emotional deaths and faints or fits as described in Shakespeare. This tells us that the idea of dying from a broken heart has been around since Elizabethan times at least.
The next link is an account from the BMJ in the year 1900 describing that "Poor Professor Jones died that night of a broken heart brought on by grief and sorrow at the deaths among our staff and the worry and anxiety inseparable from a hospital like ours".
There are deaths that medical science cannot fully explain. We often see in the intensive care setting an almost opposing phenomenon: where a patient stays alive until the last of their relatives has come to say their goodbyes, and then they die.
It is as if there is some human factor of willpower - the will to stay alive - that stays until some sort of condition is met, and then is released. When there is no more will to live, then the patient dies. Naturally, this has not been scientifically verified.

I suppose so, but not literally from a broken heart, maybe the person is unable to eat or sleep. Also if the person has depression and is left untreated, the person may become suicidal. When i first got with my man, 6 months prior he had broken up with his ex of 5 years, and they have a child. He did not eat for 2 whole weeks, and he was seriously depressed. Now we can talk about it openly he was contimplating suicide. He seeked proffesional help. I hope you don't suffer like he had to.

I don't know.... but I've always found it curious that a couple who have been married for a very long time will die within a year of each other.
