The service has not been all that good, and I've had to buy my own drinking cups since they don't seem to remember to leave new ones every day.

To be fair to the staff, I should add that there are three of us, in three beds, and they come daily to clean.

First off, as a former housekeeper, kudos to you for even thinking about tipping. In the 2 yrs I was a housekeeper, I was only tipped once! I even cleaned our ex-governor's room and he didn't tip. (Guess who didn't get my vote in the next election? :) And to the person who said hotel housekeepers get paid hourly - yes they do, but mostly minimum wage or just a little above. Working poor.

If the service has not been good, then I suggest tipping a dollar a day or less. I read that $2/day is considered the appropriate amt.

If I'm just staying overnight, I usually don't tip. If I'm staying more than one night usually about $5. If I'm staying for a week and the service is good about $20. However, if extra service is requested like more towels, then a tip is given at the time of service.

Tipping is good and righteous...

I dont stay at fancy hotels usually, but the way i see it... $2 a night makes sense to me. If i we're staying somewhere swanky, then, maybe a couple bucks more.

Of course, even MORE, if i made special requests....

i.e. leaving a note for extra bottles of the frilly shampoo/lotion/etc

If the tip is warranted, leave one.
If the tip isnt warranted, dont leave one.

All this SILLY TALK about "oh you should leave such n such to send them a message" is crazy.

If you really want to let them know your feelings, leave a note for the housekeeper stating what you liked or didnt like. Or, talk tot he hotel/motel manager.

visitors shouldn't could do something for themselves, Be a stable host, and spend the added funds on some prostitutes. stable ones, too -- not those much less high priced truck stop skanks or those teenaged boys who carry out in public restrooms.
